Default Just a quick brag about DS...

....he's 5, but missed the cutoff age for Kindergarten so he's in preschool. We had our parent-teacher conference this week and - drumroll please - he can read at a second grade level!

We knew he was smart, but it's always nice to have the external validation.

~That's awesome! I think he's going to be bored in Kindergarten though. Do they have a gifted program?~

Yeah, I'm concerned about the being bored part. They started off this year having him go to the Kindergarten class for reading, but they currently have someone working with him one on one.

The issue I struggle with is his autism - most of the issues it manifests in him are social, so holding him in preschool is better for working on his social skills. I don't think that the learning is as big a deal when he's this age (we can teach him enough at home to keep him challenged) but when he gets older I can see it being an issue if there's a huge gap with his social skills and academic skills. I'm not sure yet how we're going to address it.
