Default Would you get a new TV?

Please help me decide if we should get a new TV or not. Our TV is 20+ years old - an old hand me down from my in-laws. It doesn't always work the greatest and is acting up more and more. We haven't planned for this expense, however I do have the money to pay cash. We are looking at a 32 in that is about $300. We only have 1 TV.

Do we get a new one with the black friday deals or do we just wait it out and possibly pay more for it at a later date when the current TV goes completely. Keep in mind I don't just have an extra $300 laying around - I have a list of savings goals that it could go towards - like a new furnace, water heater, braces, etc. Things that we know eventually will need to be paid for.

If I saw a great deal I would unless it will short you for any of your other savings goals.

I purchased my bedroom TV on a black friday deal. A little advice, you get what you pay for, make sure the deal you are looking at is a good as you think it is.

Other than that, why not? You have the cash and you want a new one. if you were going to put it on a CC would be one thing.

I would look for a free one right after christmas would be the best time.My son-in-law has found 4 TV's that work in the city dump here. Three big consoles and a 13 in. He goes to our city dump here all the time you can't imagine the things he finds some things still in packages new never opened.

If you are going to buy new.........RESEARCH IT WELL. They
are having some serious problems with some of the new flat screens. Everything from smoking and dying when not very old..........to lasting about 2 years before the screen screws up, etc.

I would look on CL............like other poster stated. I see older
FREE ones on mine all the time. People just want the 'latest and greatest'........your gain!

I do worry about getting a new one because the new ones don't seem to last near as long as the old ones. We have done some research and some of the BF deals the brands are not good, others get excellent reviews. We will only get a decent one, but because we want a small one (compared to most people!) and because we are shopping the great deals - it looks like we can get what we want for around $300. I'm just not sure what to do! we don't want anything fancy, but definitely want one that will last.

btw, do NOT get a Plasma. The resolution is AWESOME but they burn out quickly. Pay a little more and get a LCD that is supposed to last a good while.

also, make sure to pay attention to all the details too, I know a 720p isnt much better than a old fashed CRT, but a 1080p is great. The other measurements mean important things too.

Super bowl time is a great time to buy a new TV. That gives you a little more time to research and save up.

I don't know...I bought a $99 tv on a black friday off Amazon, and it's still working great after a year. Bought a 32" for $249 when Olevia went out of business 3 or 4 years ago, and it's a wonderful tv, no problems. If the deal is good enough, I'd buy a new tv. $300 though? Probably not.

i wait until a electronics gadget friend gets a new tv then i get her hand me downs.
    11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

If you have a good thriftstore around you might want to check there also. Spend a couple of bucks on a TV. Meanwhile save up some money and purchase a new TV around Superbowl time. Remember last year they were having a bunch of sales at this time of year. Also by then you will have done your research and might be able to find one that is this years model on sale.

I purchased a Bestbuy model HDTV and it works really well. Am really pleased with it.

Put the word out that you are looking to buy a used one. Who knows you might get one free from someone buying one on the sales. I got rid of a very nice Christmas tree one year when a friend said she was looking for one, I decided it wasn't worth putting one up just to get knocked over by the cats but I didn't know what to do with it until she took it.
