Default My brother gave me a sewing machine.....

so my brother does side work which is called a scrap metal junker person..meaning he will find people or they find him (word of mouth) that want to get rid of stuff and he goes and takes any metal item's that he sell's for so much a pound..he makes out really well sometimes with old junk cars worth $100's a month ..so today I get a phone call from him (first time he ever called me and offered me anything) and he asked if I wanted a sewing machine I of coarse asked him some question's like does it work, does it have all it's part's ect..I don't need to add any more STUFF to my already overly crowded home..fast forward he tell's me it work's so I said okay I'll take it..my brother show's up and my dh is outside fixing his truck and hears me telling my brother that i need to find a place to put it and I'm not sure if I really have the room to store it.. maybe we can put it in the garage for now ..my dh without seeing and without knowing anything said's nothing is going in my garage..I said well at least look at it..my brother is saying well if you don't want it I'm going to junk it....well I know it's a very old sewing machine that sit's on it's own base, has a antenna like thing that hold's 2 bobbin's of thread along with a foot pedal and even a light so I know it's worth some money..my dh look's at it and said's to my brother you shouldn't junk it it's a antique..so after all the talk we decided to keep it..my dh said's he think's a 1960 or 70's Singer model....we find the model number dh look's it up on the internet to find it's a 1937 Singer industrial sewing machine and it's value is over a $1000.00............I'm so excited to know I have a piece of history..I don't plan on selling it I plan on using it!

Awesome find! And it's intact? Incredible!

Do take it to be serviced and cleaned. If it hasn't been used in a while it's probably got gunked up oil and dust in places you don't want.

    Any pictures?

The thread rack at the top (antenna-looking thing) holds either spools or more likely, cones of thread. The bobbin goes inside under the needle plate. There may also be a bobbin winder on the right hand side of the machine, which will wind a spare bobbin as you sew. One of the cones you place on the thread rack feeds into the machine to sew with, and the other cone will feed down into the bobbin winder.

There's a learning curve with industrials. Let me know if you have any questions. What a great find! Congrats.

Sorry for some reason I can't get pictures to load on this forum? I was thinking last night while trying to go to sleep that I was wrong on saying the bobbin on the atenna thingy... Thanks for the detailed info what you described is exactly spot on...

I usually upload photos to Webshots and then post them to this forum.

What's the model number on your machine? Does the machine have its own stand? The stands on my industrials are about four feet long and supported on heavy steel legs. The motors are mounted underneath the tables. Just curious.

My mom has a Pfaff she bought new in the 1950's. Hers does weigh fifty pounds. Back then, sewing machines were made with metal parts, including the housing. Now they contain many more plastic parts so are much lighter.
