Greebo and I used to go hiking at a local state park when we first met.
I loved being outdoors with him.

Cook dinner together and try something a bit fancier then your usual fare. Watch HIM do the dishes

Pack a picnic and people watch at a park or beach.
Reminisce about where and how you both first met and if its doable maybe go back and visit the exact spot - if its a restaurant, maybe go for a drink instead and share an appy vs a meal.
Challenge each other at a group sport or activity. Exercise together - hike, bike ride, jog etc.
Play video games together
Cuddle up by the fire (or on the couch with candles going on the coffee table
), tv, radio & cell phones turned off and enjoy each others company just talking.
Surf the web together planning out a mock dream vacation. Pick something outrageous to research - hiking trip in Sweden anyone?

When I started dating DH we both lived with our parents. It was hard to do anything more frugal than just go out to eat and a movie. Now I look back and we could have figured out alot cheaper things to do. Like free activities and picking up food from the grocery store and eating much cheaper. I love the idea of cooking a meal together and sharing a nice bottle of wine.

I've turned my DH into a $5 movie-a-holic from Wally World, or $2-4 previously viewed movies from the video store. Our video collection is, eh hem, LARGE, so we cuddle on the couch. Take turns watching "girly" movies or action/thriller (we both enjoy) while eating dinner. Last night we saw Jurassic Park - yes, I know the movie by heart, my baby brother must've watched it a thousand times when I was young, but it was fun.
My 'love language' is written notes, I'll write in dry erase marker on DH's bathroom mirror, shower stall, etc. I also have these printed post it type notes that have love messages/ Christian messages on them - I leave those everywhere (car steering wheel, dresser drawer, on bathroom mirror, on top of leftover cheesecake in fridge - trust me, it'll be seen!! :-)
I've even given him a love sticky note pad in his Christmas stocking, and have recieved a couple on MY bathroom mirror - warm fuzzies!!
Doesn't have to be a huge gesture, either. We took the new (to us) snowplow truck to fill her up last night, and held hands as we drove the five miles. So nice!Vermont has two seasons: Wintah and the Fourth of July.

Cook a romantic dinner, wear your best nightie, send the kids to grandma's and well the rest is totally free lol.
That's always worked for us.

Dh and I liked to play our favorite songs for each other and he sang some of his faves for me! I have very fond memories of that especially one from one of our first dates where we went to Bub's Pub in Chapel Hill when I was in college there and he sang "Magic Carpet Ride" to me and he was rocking back on his heels and getting into it and well...20 something years later I can still picture it and it always makes me smile!
Another time was a weekend trip to Myrtle Beach to a resort and we walked on the beach one night and he sang me a funky, but sweet song that he learned as a child. I loved it! He sang it to our kids when they were babies. Thanks for the sweet memories!

From a list I put together for when couples I see in my office tell me that they can't afford to "date" their partner...
Ice skating, roller skating, sledding, indoor/outdoor rock climbing, hit a bucket of balls at the driving range, produce picking at a local farm, visit a farmers market and then make a meal with the loot, visit a winery for a tour and tasting (they often have free music), bowling, visit the zoo, hiking, biking, go to a ballgame, swimming, frisbee golf, mini golf, fishing, geocaching, wash your cars together, ice blocking, fly a kite, take your dog for a walk, build a snowman, go to a water park, explore a cave, go to a park and feed the ducks, grab a beer and play pool or darts, see a show but pick up obstructed view or rehearsal tickets for cheap, local live music, go to a bookstore and browse with a coffee, test drive a car together, visit a "haunted" location, cook together, host a potluck TV party with friends, throw or paint pottery, art shows or museums, try a class together like yoga (the first is often free), go to garage sales or flea markets, see what's happening at an area college/university (lectures, music, plays, sporting events, festivals), do something for a neighbor like rake their lawn, star gazing at a planetarium, free factory tours, visit a psychic, visit a pet store, go to a roller derby bout, grab your cameras and take pictures together, visit a show (dog, cat, car, etc.), go to a target range, visit real estate open houses, throw a tent in the car and go camping, tubing or rafting.

Prep everything you need for hot chocolate so when you get home from walking around a holiday lit neighborhood all you have to do is heat it up and pull out some homemade cookies.

We borrow DVDs from the library and settle in on the couch with a homemade dessert.
Another thing we do is to go on a walk together, followed by a warm drink (it's usually cold here), and time to talk/plan things.
Or we will go to a cafe for tea and fruit for me and dessert for him. Cheaper than going out for a full meal at a restaurant. We do this sometimes after going to the second run movie theatre.2012 Challenges
