Default Thank Goodness For "Hoarders" (show)

My dd gets Netflix and that is the only "tv" that we can get. The older kids(adults) have become hooked on the show "Hoarders" and let me tell you what a blessing that show has been. Before they started watching it, they would always give me a hard time about cleaning their rooms....the rest of the house would be clean, but their rooms were a disaster area.ACK!...so now...I am silently laughing to myself b/c now after they have seen the insides of the houses on the show, they have been cleaning/decluttering maniacs......and I am breathing a sigh of relieflol.

That show can be an inspiration to others. That show is my nightmare.....I don't understand how it can get that bad but after 1 episode I am moving the furniture and cleaning like a mad woman.

Although I am purging away, I think I'd better take in one the Hoarder episodes to get more inspiration!!

The most common statement I've heard about these types of shows: People with a lot of clutter aren't hoarders. Hoarders have filthy houses. Um...dear clutterbug, unless you continually move your clutter around to dust and wipe down the surfaces its on etc...its still dirty. Is it filthy...that could be debatable.

Hoarders doesn't inspire me to purge, sort and clean. Instead it grosses me out and makes me cry each time they find a dead cat underneath the 'stuff'. :'(

I watch Consumed for inspiration - it totally motivates me.

~I watch a portion of a Hoarders show almost every night while Dh is getting the kids to bed. I think of it as a preventative measure.
I'm fairly minimalist and non-consumerist as compared to the average person but my relationship with my things isn't always rational. Regularly seeing the show has helped me confront and work on those issues more frequently than I had been doing before the show.
Knowing how far I could go as a "Saver" is motivating to work now on any mental or emotional issues that could turn my projects and collections into hoarding.~

My husband and kids make fun of me because I find this show to be so fascinating. The psychology of a hoarder is hard to understand. There are so many different reasons why people hoard and so many different kinds of hoarders (like adult diaper hoarders as compared to doll hoarders). The thing that is kind of scary is that many of these hoarders used to be very neat and tidy housekeepers but something changes and makes them go in the exact opposite direction...

i watch hoarders and the other show too - buried alive (tlc's version i think?).

i find them hard to watch as my father was a hoarder and it brings up lots of tough emotions for me...but i also find them motivating to get up and do anything (clean, sort, purge, whatever) if even for just 2 minutes.

i want to watch that consumed show, but i can't find it for download anywhere.

Thanks Libby. I've been watching Consumed all morning now! My dining room is clean. But I have scads of stuff to run up and down stairs. I'm re-arranging, but I'm not purging. I feel like a bit of a failure. Gotta figure out what to get rid of. It's all my craft stuff. How to purge it?

ETA: Dinah, I watched the show online at the HGTV site. Click on 'video' on the bar and the episodes will come up to click on. Just a warning. Every time there was an ad it opened a new window on my computer. I didn't realize what was going on till there were about 20 windows open! Not good when running on battery power.

I used to watch clean house and would end up throwing stuff out. If I watch hoarders I just get really grossed out.

I find Hoarders depressing and sad. It's like they are detached. I have to hand it to them for going public.
