I don't know about ONE thing, but milk is ALWAYS on my list. We go through a lot of it. Other than that, I'd say dried pasta or canned tomatoes.

Mine too..........in fact, in the winter that is about the only time I go to the store.............when I am out of milk.........then pick up other things.

My other thing would be EGGS........gotta have eggs.

I have to have flour and other baking things in the pantry. Without those, I'm lost as I can't make a loaf of bread or muffins if we are low on those types of things. Also always need pasta and something to make sauce,

What I did when I was making up my list, I looked at the go to recipes I always use and made those on my list. I also put things on like juice for my son's lunches as he's autistic and will only drink certain ones.

Garlic and onions are must haves.

Milk, butter, bread, eggs, rice, flour, tea and sugar are high on the list too.

Then there's olive oil, soy sauce, mayo, mustard, hot sauce and bbq sauce.

I'll run out in the middle of making dinner to get any of these items...

My main list is I couldn't just say ONE food item is more important than the others...I would say these item's are at the top though..

Milk ( have powdered milk for a sub if no other choice)
Potatoes ( have instant for a sub if no other choice)
Onions ( have dehydrated for a sub if no other choice)

p.s. I also have LOTS of food stockpiled to make alot of different meals..so I'm probably not a good candidate..

cream or half and half for DH coffee
Sour Cream good for oh so many things
    romaine, lettuce, something for salads

Of course, if you only go shopping once every couple of weeks, the shopping list is usually longer. These things are just always on. And I always bring my price list to check for good prices.

    Milk and white bread weekly.
I can stretch this out to 2 weeks if I have to by sticking bread in
the frig/freezer and watching the expiration on the milk.

Coffee is high on list, but I stock up and stay ahead.
Likewise sugar. Scratch ingrediants to bake with.
    Margerine, butter, and cooking oil.

Eggs would be also, but I just go out to the chicken coop
Meat and veggies are either pressure canned or frozen.
And I stay ahead with these also.

When you open the last box or bottle of something, put it on the list asap.
Get stocked ahead and maintain a inventory list.

Eggs, milk, onions, carrots, celery, I use these most often and when I run out.... I know it.

    Milk is the ONLY thing.

Everything else is stockpiled or I don't really care whether I have it or not. Fresh vegetables are constantly changing with the seasons and what's at the farmers' market. DH drinks milk for breakfast every day and simply cannot function without it, so it is the only thing that I can't work around.
