    It depends on who and how a gift is given - but a thank you is always given.

    If a gift is not opened in the presence of the giver, we write notes telling them how nice it was for them to think of us in such a special way, and include how we are going to use the item.

    For gifts that are opened, like at a holiday. A hug and thank-you is given to the gifter. Usually they are close family.

    Birthday gifts are always given a written acknowledgement.

    To make sure they are written, Diva can't use ANY gift she was given until the gifter has been thanked in one fashion or the other.

    My mom always made me write thank yous, and I continue to this day. Getting married was the worst, sooooo many notes to write. That alone would be enough to keep me from going through divorce and getting married again.
