Freezing rain but schools remain open?
So the weather is real bad right now lots of freezing rain, turning to rain, then turning to snow. They have canceled all school buses. The police are reporting lots of accidents, the 401 is closed.
But the schools remain open! I don't understand that I am not walking DD to school in this it is like an ice rink out there. I also don't get why the expect the teachers to drive in. So today is a no school day in my house. I don't feel like falling or having DD fall. Am I unreasonable in my thinking that they should just close the schools?2012 Challenges

I wouldn't have sent my kids either. I have called a snow day a couple of times when the school did not.

Yes, I would have kept mine home too. This is Texas and we don't know anything about navigating in icy/snowy weather.
Its about The $$$. The school gets x number of $ for each child each day they go to school and the schools just can't afford snow days. They are strapped for funds. The math never lies, budget in INK!

Pretty bad here, too. Schools open, only till 12:30, but all afterschool activities were cancelled yesterday. . . Our school has already used up it's 5 snow-day allotment, so they try not to call it off. (make up in June)

They will probably close the school early so all you would have been doing was walkng to the school and walking to the school again to pickup your child. Better to be safe and warm at home.

I have never understood how a school district can cancel bus transportation but not cancel school when they do. To me that is just crazy. Some people do not have the ability to drive their kids if the bus is not running...just makes no sense to me.
Right is right even if no one else is doing it. Wrong is wrong even if everyone else is doing it.

My kids go to school in that weather. We've had it all winter. DS13 rides the bus and DS8 walks and schools around here have yet to cancel for anything like that.
I don't think it's unreasonable to keep your child at home, but at the same time, kids who live within a block or two of the schools are still expected to walk. If you live close enough to walk, they expect you to bring your child to school.
That's what flat boots with traction are for.

That's a new one. I've never heard of canceling the buses but keeping the schools open.
We don't close schools for much around here, but roads covered in glare ice would trigger a closing for sure.
I'd keep my kids home in those conditions, too.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The school here doesn't close unless the power's out. No such thing as a snow day, cold day, windchill day, etc. Unless they can't heat the school (power goes out), it's open. It's a pretty small catchment area, though, and we are Northerners.
Back home, they would often cancel buses but us town kids would still be expected to go. They did cancel all classes after a certain amount of snow, or if it was below a certain temperature with the windchill.

We get that nasty freezing rain here in Nebraska from time to time too. I keep my kids home when it happens--no way am I going to risk our safety just to take kids to school. It's hazardous enough in those conditions just to walk down our front steps, never mind walking or driving to school. Last time we had freezing rain (about a month or so ago, I think?) the ice was about a quarter of an inch thick all over everything! I think it's crazy to expect people to try to go out and navigate that mess.
