What do you think when you see an obscene display of wealth?
Which of course, we all see all the time, right?
Today I saw this guy ( who appeared to be about 32) in a Porsche Carrera. This is a pretty common sight where I live as there are many wealthy (or wanting to appear wealthy) people living in my part of town.
When I see that kind of blatent display of wealth it just screams insecurity to me. Are they trying to impress the guy in the next lane or do they actually value the fine Austrian engineering that can only be found in a Porsche? I really feel sorry for people like that. I know I sound patronizing but it's true. I just feel so lucky to not be caught up in all that.
Does anyone else feel that way when they see such blatent displays of wealth? What other displays of wealth do you find particularly annoying or tragic? I'm curious.

For a split second, I think, "I wonder how many unfortunate people that money could have helped?". Then, I realize it's NONE of my business how someone spends the money they've earned. What do I know??? Maybe they've donated a higher percentage of their income to charity than I have. Shame on me!
How much we enjoy what we have is more important than how much we have. Life is full of people who have more than they know what to do with, but cannot be content. It is the capacity to enjoy life that brings contentment.---Unknown

I can't think of any one thing a this moment. I see all the time things that other people spend their money on (if they are rich or not I don't know) that I wouldn't spend my money on. Not that is makes it wrong just that I wouldn't spend money on it or as much as some people seem to.
Just for instance, jewelry, some people have a ton of it not that it even has to be expensive, just they like it and have a lot of it. I don't have hardly any except for my wedding set and a few costume things. Another thing lots of potions and perfume. A different things for every wrinkle or age spot.
I guess along with this frugal lifestyle I have pared things down to just what I need on a daily basis.
I am sure this is not the type of answer you were looking for, I hope others will add their thoughts.Married 22 years to Mark

Nope. If I saw someone driving around in that car, I'd be so busy admiring it, I wouldn't have a chance to question his/her motives for buying it.
I figure that if I don't want people judging me, I need to extend that same courtesy.McD

Oheoh: Where are you, Norfolk?
Daisy: I thought it was Italian but looked it up and the founder was Austrian (but then those Austrian/German types have consistently thought they were the same tribe so I guess it doesn't matter.)
Sami: I don't obsess over it, but I don't think shame on me when I judge. We all judge. I just can't understand wanting to spend your money like that.
Jas: I don't know what I'm looking for. Was just thinking about it...

Some people like cars

I believe in spending money on things that you like. If you happen to think a Porsche is a beautiful thing and you can afford it, more power to you. If you only want it to impress people then you're a tool. Since I don't know the motivations of a stranger, I wouldn't notice or care about their car.

Nope, I don't feel that way at all and I don't think anything about it. It's not up to me how people choose to spend their money.

I don't think that when I see a Porsche maybe because they are a common car where I live. I might think that when I see Bentleys or Lamborghinis.

I don't think I'd notice a Porsche, as a Porsche and not another car... only because I don't really look at cars unless it was covered in bumper stickers or a really LOUD color or muffler
What is an "obscene display of wealth"? A high-end car? A larger than needed home? A home in general? Non-generic food?
Now... if someone was walking around in a diamond-crusted evening gown with $100 bills pinned to it and using dollars like hankies...
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

We call them "small penis cars". Our theory is that his "bits" are too small and he has to get a fancy car to attempt to impress a female. It is great for discussions on money and how to treat women and putting a priority on things like personality and values.

Not too many at all...........nothing I can think of right now..........though I am not a big lover of "gaudy jewelry".......don't care if it is real or fake! Just a "style" I don't like.
As long as I don't have to pay their bills..........they can buy whatever they like...........and if they are a friend and I can enjoy "it" with them...........all the better!!!
If someone has a huge house.............I just want to go INSIDE and see it!

I love looking at nice cars...I do think it's foolish to spend $50,000 or more on a vehicle but that's just my own personal opinion..
