Springfield, IL??????
My girlfriends and I are planning a trip to Springfield, IL this coming summer. We like to see historical sites, go antiquing, and eat in cheap but great restaurants. We also enjoy shabby-chic unique coffeeshops.
Can anyone give some advice on what to see.... where to go?Spiritual:

First of all, you have to meet up with ME ! I live just south of Springfield and work at Memorial Medical Center. . . . after that:
Lincoln's home, tomb, libary etc. . . and a short trip to Petersburg to visit New Salem state park.
The old state capital building is downtown, near Lincoln's library - and the old train depot, right downtown. . .
The downtown area has lots of little cafe's/coffee shops -- and some cute little boutiques for artsy shopping. . .
The muni usually has good shows on weekends during the summer. . . and Washington park has the carillon (first week of June has the carillon festival - but every Sunday is a concert and worthwhile to sit for an hour or so to listen - all free of course) Washington park also has the botanical gardens.
There is the Dana Thomas house (built by Frank Lloyd Wright) and the Ellijah Isles House. . . . Lincoln Memorial gardens. . .
Eating -- The Parkway Cafe on the east side is great for homestyle meals, Sgt. Pepper's cafe on Stevenson has good food. . . Steak-N-Shake for burgers, fries and amazing milk shakes, a cozy dog place on S. 6th st. (part of the Rt. 66 )
And you have to try a horse shoe -- Darcy's Pint is famous for it's horseshoes - was on cable TV food show
The state museum is free to visit. . . (so are most of the Lincoln sites - the library costs to visit) and there is a gas station on Peoria Road that has lots of Rt. 66 memorabilia - etc.
So. . . . when are you coming ?

Wow! Great ideas so far! I knew there was Lincoln stuff in the area, but no idea that all the rest of this was there. Thanks! We will probably be there in June. Every year we get together someplace for a week of non-stop talk and catch up, shopping, eating chocolate, and more talk. And we like to take in local sites.
