triple whammy income wise -layoff -slow work etc
so my work has been extremely slow - medicare - medicaide cutbacks again = a shortened amount of time we can be in the home. Mild winter= less medical issues that need hospitalization and treatment at home .
I am per deim - i get the FT overflow - i use to basically be PT as far as #'s - but work my own days etc as i case manage my own cts.
my saving grace is some clients coming back to us and asking for me specifically as they had me before . Otherwise i would have less or no work. i need 15 a week i use to see 20-22 a week - i am at 6 for next week as of right now ,
DH and ds 23 work for same company- they were told friday at 4pm that the big upcoming sale of the company fell thru ( IMO the owners hid stuff hoping the new owners would not find out until after purchased ) and they had 2 weeks notice of being laid off ( only because thats what their contracts spoecified . whether they actually will see the pay who knows i can see the head guys who technically owned 20% of the stock give themselves huge severence and walk away - apparently as of 5pm the state took over since they are a state licensed company .
what we are doing
all 3 updating resumes .Friday night i sent out mine to a FT position that is telephonic ( work from my home ) about the only way i could do FT with the kids and my fibromyalgia .
i prefer not to press my health issues but its benefited and if i had to to keep us with benefits - thats the only way i could do it.
took note of area per deim positions for home care or LTC assessments i could do in addition to my now job ( which i do love my job right now )
dh immediately started contacting people that previously had been contacting him in december when they heard of the pending buyout.he was planning along with my son to stay and work for new company.
SO even though its the weekend he has at least 1 head hunter looking for him ,has talked to 2 different companies personally interested in him - and possibly for ds but maybe no room for him for a month or so .
DS lives with us - he can pay his school loans cell and car insurance and have some left after with what he would get in unemployment .
I THINK he wouldnt need to pay to cobra his insurance because being 23 if dh gets a new job asap he can still be covered under dhs insurance ( which would actually be better coverage than what ds had )
dh could pay the mortgage and a little more with his unemployment and thats it- so obviously as much as he would like to find a place that would take them both he is the priority .
they work in a very small specialized segment of the insurance industry- because itsa lay off with the company closing he is able to take his " book " with him vs if he quit or was fired etc he has a contract that says he cannot contact these people professionally or personally for 6 months or longer maybe .
so even though he is going to be out of work in a bad economy because of his "book" and being known for his hard work and excellent ethics in such a specialized area he may be able to find employment quick, i hope at least any of the feelers he has out there could fall thru !!
my son was recently in the industry newsletter after winning a award he got for being chosen by his peers at a highly recognized
business school for the area- and is way ahead of where dh was in in the same industry at his age dh was 30 by the time he was in as far as ds is at 23 so we are hoping that helps him .
i am trying to stay positive and calm .... but its just so crazy that 3 jobs all in professions that are usually considered very stable - are so unstable right now !!!

So sorry to hear this is going on for you and your family. One thing I have noticed is that on FV people seem to be able to bounce back quickly from these situations. It sounds as if your family is doing everything possible to find another job. Sending warm positive thoughts your way. Know you will be posting soon about new jobs!

Budget wise
not alot i can cut back
food
allowances
will save on gas and tolls when 2 weeks is up and they no longer travel to work.
if it became a long term issue cable would go - cell phones are contracts and needed for safety and employment reasons
internet needed for my job as my house / car are my offices for most part.
my kids attend private school - again if a long term issue - we would pull them out but i cant mess with childrens well being for what may be a short term issue .
car payments- i need really reliable for my job i cant say sorry your family member is in ICU because i didnt get to your house to give your mom insulin because my beater died.
one day i will have it paid off and keep it but i will at least know its a safe model and its past hx ( ie know its been properly maintained ) dh - he had a transportation allowance with this job and was required to have a car less then 4 years old.
we also have 2 fully paid cars the 20 yo and 23 yo drive for work college etc the 17 yo may be sharing the 23 yo so he can get to college in fall IF 23 yo doesnt need it for work ( ie he and dh end up working together again one day ).
i found out that i can actually use the PTO i have accumulated over the past 3 years that i was previously led to believe wasnt usable for per deim
i used 8 hrs last pay
i have 40 hours left and intend to get that ASAP as they will allow me to add to to each week .
We can call the schools and ask for payment deferrment until things get settled but since its auto withdrawal i dont know.
I know before the mortgage crisis they use to say to call the mortgage company and ask they defer a payment by adding it to the end - i dont know if they will do that or not our mortgage company was bought a year or so ago by bank of america .
i also dont know if they will let you do the same with car payments if you call up front .
i have been eyeing up things we can sell treadmill in basement that we planned to clean out and use as an exercise area - but it can go - i have some broken gold chains i can sell - i have somethings i can list on ebay .
if the company actually pays dh on the 30th which as of right now they say they will( which covers mortgage and tuition ) we can flex others stuff- the first pay of the month ( which i consider the 30th to go to the early month bills )are things we cant flex.
i am wondering if i should call the mortgage company now just in case he doesnt get paid . and if he does - just pay ahead
we have a BEF which because of car issue with one car earlier this month and because of my working less early this month while my grandmother was on hospice care until she passed - is less than 1000.
oh and BTW our credit ratings is very good - so if that plays any part in mortgage company extending a payment to end to skip a month that wouldnt be an issue*~Debbi~*

ladytoysdream - thanks- the first 12 hours i was reactive - mad cussing his bosses out in my mind ( because this doesnt shock me entirely -and they way they blamed the people wo worked for them when it was because they didnt know how to run the company ) dh was with them 10 years- last summer he gave up going away with me and the kids to work for th em when they needed him .
i was so mad had to take a benadryl to sleep !!
but once i get done my reactive stage i get pro-active because one has no control at all when they are only reacting . and when i feel like we have some control - i dont have palpatations !*~Debbi~*

The job my hubby had before this one, he had that one for 17 years. They built trucks per custom order. Competition came in and bought the place. Things were fine for a couple of years. Then wham. In June, they said they were closing the place down. They did have to give the employees several months notice due to the factory having like 200 employees. My hubby ended up going to that years end, because he was a painter, and all the orders had to be completed and out the door. We could of moved to another state to keep his job, but he said no thanks.
He was laid off for 3 months, and then was able to get his current job. The pay is poor, the health benefits are good, and it's 3 miles one way. Job is secure, but his knee is acting up. He better stay healthy so he can early retire in 2 years.--------My signature--------

@ maryCarney - i have worked at home before PTdoing telephonic type of work along with workman comp reviews
i am more a people person - i have had employers ask me to do full time in office management nursing positions and its just not my true calling - i get excellent reviews when doing it but hands on with the senior community in their own homes is my calling .
i always say if i hit the lottery i would still work but start a non profit company providing free services to elderly homebound who medicare deems to no longer need skilled home care- but would really have a markedly improved quality of life by having a medical professional check in on them once a week -to prevent them from getting to the point they need to be hospitalized.
DH really doesnt want me to work FT. There would be more money i would bring in - but more going out too as i wouldnt have time to do things i do to save money .Last edited by Momto5RN; 01-22-2012 at 07:29 PM. Reason: typo

My company is feeling the same pain from Medicare and Medicaid cutbacks. Last Summer and Fall, I looked into going back to hospital nursing doing the Float Pool around the time the company announced that we wouldn't get raises, holiday parties, etc. I was working in the business office as a PT nurse auditor and didn't feel the position was secure any longer (not to mention it's boring!). Unfortunately, the float pool stopped accepting applicants and unit PRN pay was decreased and the positions were put on hold. I felt very discouraged because I have over 20 years of experience. A friend of mine (who is not a nurse) said that nurses can find jobs easily. I wanted to punch her... the public doesn't realize that no one is hiring nurses right now even though there's a nursing shortage. Fast forward to today- I've transferred to a hospital owned by my company and am in orientation for a position on an oncology unit (my favorite kind of nursing)
Something good came out of a bad situation- hope you have wonderful things come out of your's also!

there are a slew of hospital posistions out there around me but all 12 hour shifts and many nights ( cant do with my fibro - normal sleep cycles play a huge part in how healthy i am now ) and i physically cannot do them with my fibro either my upper body strength is not good .
and also with my latex allergy ( yes hospitals advertise latex free but theres more to that then gloves and balloons - i could walk into a hospital room / er and find 10 things with latex in 5 minutes .)
Glad you got into a job you really will love.
I am hoping i can stay where i am if dh picks up something quick enough - and then maybe do a similar position being per deim on the side .*~Debbi~*
