Default "Dive" film about dumpster diving for food

A good film about dumpster diving for food.

    [ame="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1490637/"]Dive! (2010) - IMDb[/ame]

I have some household items that I have dumpster dived, but I have not dived for food.

I got the DVD from my library (ILL), of course.

To everyone who is going to say, "I would never eat food out of a dumpster" - how about a wrapped, sealed box of Russell Stover chocolates? from a drugstore dumpster.

Nope. Not w/o being starving to death first. The amt of bacteria in the bin already is enough to deter me.
Plus when I worked a very short stint at Kroger they incinerate everything. I don't know of ANY grocer around here that doesn't have a locked bin area.

It bothers me that all this food is being thrown out instead of being donated to the local homeless shelters or food banks. Companies should receive tax breaks for donating food which would alternately be thrown out.

Unfortunately this has become such a litigious society that no one wants to take a chance on being blamed for someone getting ill and a jury awarding the victim millions of dollars.

I also find it frustrating to see the waste, but I understand both sides of the coin, and it is unfortunate.

I watched it via Netflix streaming. Would love to see these companies donate the food instead of throwing it away

It seems it would be fine to donate the food before it hit the dumpsters, and to give tax breaks for donations. There is often expired food at the food banks (Still perfectly edible). They could start having participants who are in need of the use of Food Banks and Soup Kitchens sign a waiver so no one would be held liable.

I wouldn't eat food out of a dumpster unless I was in completely dire straights and had to feed my children- we've had some tough times, but never THAT tough. That being said, it is horrible that usable items are not donated.

It's interesting to me the things I thought I'd never, ever do to make ends meet. I've been humbled repeatedly in these last 4 years, and I will never again say never would I to anything.

Do I want to dumpster dive for food, no. would I if it came down to it? You bet.

But before I get to that place I'm going to do everything in my power to learn how to grow and preserve as much of my own food as I can, perhaps even consider small livestock like rabbits. I however am one of the lucky ones who has a bit of land, not everyone does. If someone needs to dumpster dive to put food on the table, well...what can you say really? How can one judge?

It's certainly sad to see food go to waste when so many are truly hungry in this country. I'd love to see this practice changed.

    I agree

Here, where I live, I don't think much usable is thrown out. It is donated to Homeless shelters and food ministries.

Some are donated to the Salvation Army and given away for free even in the thrift shop.

When these places above have tons to give out they advertise a give away day telling what is available for free

My father used to dumpster dive during the Great Depression. I wish no one had to and agree there should be more efforts made to get food items to people who could really benefit.

I would do it if I was going to do it or die..otherwise food items would not be something I would eat from a dumpster.I don't care if things are wrapped- some are not and maggots and rats moving about on things would gross me out.I hope times don't get so bad that the maggots and rats look good.
