    Default Glass spontaneously breaking

I was just sitting here at my desk at work. Next to me is a plain tall glass that I recently finished drinking a lukewarm ice tea drink from. It was empty. I heard a *ping* and I noticed a crack around the bottom of it, just above the base. I picked it up and the bottom came off.

Never had that happen before. Glass spontaneously breaking.

A quick internet search shows that this happens sometimes to all sorts of glass. Resonance frequencies, or imperceptable stresses to the glass.

Time to get a new glass. Maybe a plastic one this time.

I've had it happen before one time. Like you I had been drinking from it, finished it and it was just sitting there a few minutes and then heard a ping sound and it had cracked around the bottom. It was a cheaper thinner glass.

At least it was empty...could've made a real mess if you still would have had tea in it and that would have been horrible. Nothing worse than liquid all over one's desk.

There could've been a tiny imperfection that wasn't visible to your eye and with the fluctuation in temperature of the glass, it finally cracked. Just like a windshield. Sometimes you see it coming and then sometimes you don't.

Glad you weren't hurt with the broken glass.

I thought about that. I had it next to my computer. It would have been quite a mess if all the tea went into my computer.

I don't know if it was a cheaper glass or not. It was sort of heavy. It was a glass that had the company logo on it that I had gotten last year at a company party and had been using every day.

I had that happen once at a restaurant and the glass was full at the time, but at least it was just water.

I had a horrible experience with a glass baking dish once, I had just taken it out of the oven and set it in the sink. A tiny drop of water dripped from the faucet and caused the pan to literally explode into a million pieces, I could have been blinded. After that I won't use them anymore.

I had that happen once while I was doing dishes, and did cut myself (not badly). I go more slowly washing out glasses now.

I had a windshield explode. I was working lots of hours at several locations and I'd use the air conditioning when I went from one place to another. Apparently windshields don't much like going from cool to hot rapidly... Glad you were all okay!

Marjorie that's really scary, After an ice storm here, I saw a neighbor of mine pouring warm water on a windshield covered in ice. All I could think was it was going to explode.
