Not that I doubt you've heard those reports, but haven't we heard about $5/gallon before?

    From 2011..

I'm not doubting it could happen, but we've heard this number before and it didn't happen.

apparently it is still not high enough, as I see people pull up to the post office, leave their HUGE truck running, go in and get the mail from their PO Box and sit in the truck, reading the mail, while the truck is still running.

I wouldn't care, but these morons who waste gas, increase demand, and cause the price to go up for everyone, including me who only goes out once every few weeks.

The gas company will keep bringing up the price in increments, I call it. Get it to 4 something a gallon, drop it back a bit, start going higher again, and sneak it near 5, then go over 5 and drop it back again, and people are grateful it drops back. They gradually got it over 2, and then it was 3 and now it is close to 4 again, and predicted to go higher. Give it another few years, and we will think 5 is cheap.

makes me think of the cartoon I saw several years ago, two guys at a gas station filling up, the price is $9.99 a gallon, saying "When it gets to $10 a gallon I am definitely giving up driving".

The boiling frog analogy is very apt. There is nothing we can do about the price of gas, all we can do is change our driving habits.

supply and demand doesn't seem to apply very much anymore (in many areas). I believe worldwide demand is down, yet prices are up. we learned "the law of supply and demand" in school but of course it's not a law, it's just one more economic theory that doesn't work all the time in complex economic environments.

ok, so scratch the $3.59. today it's $3.65

what really ticks me off is that most of the other states that have higher gas prices have more big cities than we do and people can actually WALK to where they need to go...MOST people, not all. so gas prices aren't a problem for them. we have so many small towns and country areas that surround the "big" cities that it's impossible to walk anywhere. we live in the country and if dh were to walk to work, it would be a 7 mile walk one way and he has to be at work at 5 am.

I see us moving into the city limits sooner than later

This is exactly what we were discussing at work - the boiling frog analogy with respect to gas prices. It's very smart ... just keeps inching up and up.

I am in NC also, a suburb of Raleigh, and prices of gas are crazy near us. It is never the same day to day. I drive my son to preschool every morning passing the same station and this last week it ranged from $3.56 - 3.60; 3.59 on Monday & Tues, 3.56 Wed & Thur, and 3.60 on Friday. This morning on Gasbuddy the station is 3.63.

The way our state taxes are on gasoline does no one any favors. Every six months the tax is set based on the wholesale cost of fuel. The higher fuel price the higher the tax. In the last three years NC has moved from the middle in the list of state taxes on fuel to the top 5 in the US. One of the purposes of fuel tax is to help pay for public transportation. Public transportation that only exists within the city centers of the 5 largest cities in NC.

My husband has to travel over 30 miles each way to work, there are enough people making the trip to be able to apply for the van share through public transportation when they looked into it there is a 3+ year waiting list for a van. Apparently all the money the tax is collecting is going into the bottomless pit of the rail project from downtown Raleigh to the airport that has been in the works for 15 years.

I can walk to the local library and a park, and one grocery store. So, I actually feel lucky. But, the cost of DH's commute makes me wish we were in a position to move further south and be closer to his job. Even if we are further away from other things. I have greater control over my errand running than he has over his day-to-day drive.

Paid $3.43 yesterday here in TN. I burn 100 gallons/month, so a $1/gallon increase is an extra $100/mo. If it hits $4/gallon, then it's costing me $200/mo more than I was paying 2-3 years ago right after it hit $4 and dropped back. Of all expenses, this one is the one that fluctuates the most in my budget and is the hardest to control. I hate it, but work for a nonprofit in the inner city but I refuse to live there. After being in the city all day, I enjoy coming home to no neighbors and watching deer and rabbits play in the yard. Besides utilities and property tax are higher in the city, so I figure it's a wash.
