    Have never felt the need for one. . . but if people only recognize ones by the avatar, I guess I'm invisible.

    Well, for me, if there is no avatar then I will glance at the username. You're not invisible, you just aren't identifiable by picture. And I tend to read through threads without looking at names or pictures, like reading a script. If a post catches my fancy, or I want to reply to someone, then I look first for the avatar, then the username.
