My DD tried out for a musical today!

They are doing a musical version of Tom Sawyer...Em had to read a poem and sing...I didn't realize what the play was when I helped her pick out the poem....but it was perfect!

A poet friend wrote this:

Little Joshua
(1859-1865)


They's call me Joshua
and I's six years old.
We goin' to the summer house
they's tell me, but I's hungry.
I's walked behind
the wagons
or walked beside,
my bare feet bloody from rocks.
When I's could not keep up,
they's fixed a rope to sideboards
and 'round my neck.

The other chillin' rode inside
and mocked me when I's cry.
I's spit rocky dirt and teeth
out my mouth, not keepin' up.
The summer house was cool.
I's lay on stone steps at night
and watched fireflies,
so free to fly away and disappear
into the blackness.

I's ache in every bone,
my belly empty as they's hearts.
"Mama, I's hungry"
but you's sold and gone.
Cook throw Master's scraps
out the back door, threw to hounds
and on the ground.
I's fight dem dogs 'til I's died.

How I's got here 'neath cool grass?
Town folk wouldn't like it,
if they's knew...
they's dig me up and plant me
in a field of cotton.
No matter now...
I's not hungry no more.

When I helped her pick it out, I was trying to help her find something she could relate to and something with alot of emotion!

After she read this poem, they asked her to read "BECKY'S" part!!!

Oh, I hope she gets it!!
But even if she doesn't...it took alot for her to try and I'm sooooo proud of her!
