Am I nuts? I must be nuts!
I have made a decision for Thanksgiving (and Christmas if we do it alone as well!)
I HATE turkey. DH hates Ham.
So I want to fix both! #1 son will eat either, #2 son will eat neither. I want to do this thanksgiving like htey were when i was growing up, appetizers (usually veggies and chips with dip) cookies, 2 or 3 different pies (2 of each). A huge table of food.
We are having guests so I can send left overs home, but i am so tired of green beans as the only holiday veggie, and I just can not stand the htought of turkey right now!
I miss the holidays I used to have, we didn't just have family, we invited a widow or 2 from church and close friends too. DH's family got shocked when i dared invite friends over for his bday party! Even though I told them before hand they were very weirded out by it!
Anyway I have a roaster to use as well as my oven so cooking both is not a problem, I just have to sell dh on it, he is a turkey for thanksgiving and ham for christmas guy....
Plus we do ham for new years if we have one.
I may do ham and turkey for them all!

Melissa,
We must have been posting at the same time. We aren't having either but are having Chicken and Dumplings. I remember the Thanksgiving at home too. Huge amounts of food and everyone was happy. It's just so different now. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, no matter what you serve or who eats it.
Happy Thanksgiving

My dh is the same, but our family always did turkey for both and ham for easter.
I like turkey and ham, but doing both would be tooooo time consuming for me. I have to work Thanksgiving so dh is cooking this year.
I work 1-10 Wednesday and 12-4 Thanksgiving. DH is a wonderful cook so I'm not worried. He'll probably do a better job of it than I would...LOL

My question is why do we have to have turkey or ham? Is it because thats what we always had or is it because we are afraid to venture out in another area?
Just curious!!

Sis, I do turkey or ham cuz thats what my family did.
Personally I would do ham allll the time!
We went to mils once for new years and she did pork loin.... it was awful!
We could do a roast I guess but i want ham!
DH usually uses up all the left over turkey to make turkey salad for sandwiches. I nibble ham instead of eating lunch or breakfast.
My bil (in Houston) does goose, mydb when he lived in CA did..um... shark. My mom always had turkey cuz it was the cheapest, that maybe why I can't stand it now!
It is nice to know I am not crazy for trying both though!

Mel, we had Thanksgiving last week at Mom's and she did both! We usually only have turkey and ham for Christmas but Mom was afraid she wouldn't have enough food!
You should have seen the leftovers!

I miss the Holidays I had as a kid. My 2 Aunts would take turns with my mom for hosting the big meal. We always had Turkey (Christmastime we had that and ham) and mashed and sweet potatoes, dressing, green bean casserole, cranberry relish, pies and etc. When it was at our house mom used the good china and we ate in the dining room not the kitchen. sorry I get sentimental sometimes.
I think you should do what you like. If you don't like Turkey, don't have one! Unless you think your guests might like it.

I miss the holidays at home too. We have been away from family for the past three years now. I can't wait to eat turkey at home next year!

We're doing both too. I have to tell ya why we do turkey or ham Cj, my dsil (whom I really love, but she's very eccentric about food especially...it drives us all nuts!) is the person who believes that it doesn't have to be. So when she's in charge we'll have something like LOBSTER RAVIOLI ....????!!! So there is order in the universe it's turkey and/or ham for Thanksgiving...!
