Hello ladies, I'm back after a few days away from the computer while my friend was visiting. We had a great time and even though we are two women in our 50s, we carried on like two mad teenagers, giggling and annoying my husband and both our sons. I'm sure you'd all approve.
I'm really angry about the way prices are going in the supermarkets here and I intend to write to my local member of parliament to protest. Can someone please tell me the cost of the following products in your towns? Sugar, milk, butter, bread, bananas, tomatoes, Coke, toothpaste and toilet paper.
Here are my prices, but remember I'm in Canada and like you the prices are higher than in the States.
-Sugar - $4.68
-Milk - $3.89 for a gallon of 2%
-Butter - $2.99 (on sale)
-Bread - not sure, I make my own
-Bananas - anywhere from 59˘ to 99˘ a lb.
-Tomatoes - $2.99 a lb.
-Coke - we don't purchase Coke, but Pepsi we can get for $1.99 a 2 litre bottle
-toothpaste - 58˘ for a small tube (on sale)
-toilet paper - $7.67 for 12 double rolls
There is also 7% GST on the coke, toothpaste and toilet paper and 7% Sales tax on those 3 items as well.
Yes, we have to add 14% on toilet paper, toothpaste and Coke. Its added on to any grocery item that is not a food item that is not a basic essential, so it gets added on to laundry soap, pet food, junk food, pop, any baking item under 6 (donuts, etc), and if we purchase any drinks, such as fruit juices, pop, an environmental tax is also added on of 2˘ per container. So if we've purchased a 6 pack of fruit juice, it costs an extra 12˘ a pack, although fruit juices aren't taxed the 14%.
WOW!
24 pk of 12 oz pepsi 6.99 (dh's addiction) we also pay an additional tax on beverages...usually closer to 7.50
liter of pepsi .99 or1.39 depending if on sale
5 lb sugar 1.69 (aldi's)
1 gal whole milk 1.99 to 3.19 (prices have been fluctuating madly)
.39 for 16 oz loaf of bread (I don't buy brand name)
tomatoes...20.oz...1.09
margarine...1.29 for 3lb tub
don't know how that would translate into your curency

Milk is around $3/gallon for whole, the 2% etc is less.
Butter, I buy cheap tubs of polyunsaturated fat. I stocked up for baking during the holiday sales, .99 - $1.29/lb.
Bread, I can get a1 1/2 lb loaf at WalMart for less than $1.
Bananas bounce from .25 on sale to .38/lb, cheaper at the end of the month.
Tomatoes, We grow our own, when they're gone we do without. I can get a nice tomato plant, in the spring, for $2.
Coke runs about $4 for a 12 pack regular price lately.
Toothpaste is something I rarely pay for, but I think regular price is like $4 for a 6+ oz tube
Toilet paper depends on the brand, Angel Soft is a nice 2 ply brand. It comes on sale for aroud $3.50/24 pack often enough, otherwise its .89 for a 4 pack at Walmart.
I really do think groceries are less expensive in my part of the country. All the major food companies have plants here; Con Agra, Swanson, Frito-Lay...

I rarely remember toothpaste since I just know I only will buy it if I can get it for free or .50 a tube with coupon..but I think regular prices are around 2.89 for a small tube...
Toilet paper, well for our brand, Charmin it's about 6.39 for a double roll of 12 rolls at Target with no sale. Seems like other brands are about a couple dollars cheaper than that.
