ummm slap my wrists and tell me I'm bad, but next time could you just interupt and talk over her talking (cause people like that seldom draw enough breath to get a word in edgewise) and say mil, I'm gone now and gently set the phone down and go?
I know my mil would have had a fit, but I'd have done it if she'd been that rude. You explained why you had to leave, and when she goes on, you could just leave her talking away to herself.
Eventually she'll learn to be brief or you'll hang up. And what's more she learn that you have some limits and boundaries that you will enforce.
Worst that could happen is she could get all huffy and not speak to you for ages and ages. OOOO now THAT would REALLY HURT YOU!!!!
Like I said, call me a baaaad girl and slap my wrists.
