Exclamation And yet again - Hurricane Ivan

This is not looking good for Florida.

    http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...anes_florida_1

We need to pray and send good thoughts for QuilterMom that this doesn't hit Florida again.

Daphne, where is your mom in regards to this?

How devistating, to go through all that and know it's not over yet. I have a brother in Miami that I never hear from. I wonder where he is now. Another brother called from the Daytona Beach area as soon as the phones were back up there. He said they were lucky and just had a lot of trees down and standing water. I just can't imagine. I put a bunch of freebie personal hygine stuff in the bucket at WalMart last time I was there. I wish I had more to send.

Called my mom last night and she's still missing part of her roof from Charlie, yet will not leave. Ivan is presently being predicted to hit where? Punta Gorda/ Port Charlotte, of course! I'm so frustrated. She's in the 2nd level of a 2 level condo, is missing parts of her roof and tells me "We'll just stay in the hallway". Because it's a magic hallway. With a secret force field that when prompted will reach out across the whole condo and hold the roof on and the rain simply cannot fall within the confines of this space. No water damage, no winds to tear off the rest of the roof, absolutely and completely impervious to all forms of foul weather. All this can be yours for the extranomical cost of living in denial and putting your life in jeopardy!

She was very close to my great aunt who died a couple of days ago in NY and won't go to the funeral because she has to put herself through this yet again. She won't leave because the hurricane is coming. That is what she said. AUNT JOSEPHINE IS TRYING TO GET YOU OUT OF THERE!!!!

This is just heartbreaking. I cannot even imagine what all of these families are going through.

Milissa~I pray that your mother will come out of her state of denial and get out of there before the next storm hits. Personally, I'd be trying to drag her out forcefully if I were you. I don't think that condo unit will hold up to one more hit considering that it has already been damaged.

Here is the latest update on Ivan from the weather channel website:

Dangerous Ivan bears down on Jamaica Fri.,Sep.10,2004
    M. Ressler, Meteorologist, The Weather Channel

Hurricane Ivan remains a powerful and deadly Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. After ravaging Barbados and Grenada, Ivan skirted by Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao to the north. Its eye is now set on Jamaica. Large and powerful waves have likely already battered the southern and eastern facing shorelines. Weather conditions will deteriorate throughout the day and the first hurricane force winds could hit the southeast coast by mid to late afternoon. A possible landfall on Jamaica is anticipated late tonight or very early tomorrow morning. After Jamaica, Ivan will then set course for the Cayman Islands on Saturday. Hurricane warnings are of course in place for both Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. By the end of the weekend, Ivan is forecast to cross over western Cuba and then take aim on Florida, still as a major hurricane, Monday and Tuesday. The future path of Ivan is by no means set so keep it tuned to The Weather Channel for the latest.

I hope everyone in it's path is safe. Hopefully, they will once again evacuate.

My DH's family lives in Kingston, Jamaica and I just heard on the news that they are trying to evacuate parts of that city since they are expected to get hit hard. We have not had an email from them since early this morning. They do live higher up in the city though so maybe they won't get flooded out at least.

here is today's weather channel update. This is from 6AM EST this morning:

After rapid intensification last night, Hurricane Ivan is now a powerful and deadly Category 4 (nearly Category 5) hurricane this morning as winds are now sustained at 150 mph. After weakening a bit early in the day on Friday the hurricane went through a tremendous deepening phase dropping about 20 millibars of pressure in a 6 hour time period. Ivan's eyewall is currently going through a replacement cycle so a slight weakening trend is expected this morning only to then re-intensify after the cycle is over. Last night the center of Ivan remained offshore and paralleled the southern coastline of Jamaica (almost like a barricade was in place along the shoreline). The center is now just over 70 miles away from Montego Bay, Jamaica. Even with the eye staying over water, the hurricane as a whole has battered the island all night and early this morning. Amateur radio reports emanating from Jamaica report that rainfall has been torrential and horizontal, the winds are unleashing their destructive power, and ocean waves have been as high as a two-story building. Extreme damage has likely occurred, especially over the southern half of the island. The torrential rains that are ongoing will cause a great deal of flooding and mountain mudslides island-wide. Storm surge will be moderate but high waves will continue to batter the southern coast. After Jamaica, Ivan will then set course for the Cayman Islands during the day. Hurricane warnings are in effect for both Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. By the end of the weekend, Ivan is forecast to cross over western Cuba (a hurricane watch is in effect for the whole island) and then take aim on Florida, still as a major hurricane, Monday and Tuesday. The future path of Ivan is by no means set so keep it tuned to The Weather Channel for the latest updates.

Well, as of about 2 hours ago Ivan was forcasted to pass through Cuba and head out to the Gulf of Mexico....then guess where it's going....

Straight to the panhandle, to the capital, Tallahassee (I live in Tallahassee). Needless to say some people on my street are already buying plywood. My next door neighbors told me that if my DH helps them board up their house they will help us board up ours.

I must say this one has me worried (a BUNCH!)
