Mexican candy recalled for lead content

Lead-laced candy imported from Mexico has been recalled.

That was the word members of the Ozarks Regional Alliance (ORA) received at their November meeting.

The recall is being conducted by Lucas Candies, a division of Mars Candy Company, and involves Lucas Limon, Lucas Limon con Chile, Lucas Acidito and Super Lucas Seasonings.

These seasonings include salt-based formulas, which tested positive for lead. It was noted that testing for lead content in seasonings is often inaccurate because the salt interferes with the testing method. These methods are accurate on sugar-based candies and seasonings.

The company is voluntarily pulling the product from consumer shelves, but notification from the Greene County Health Department advised members that some 900 or more packages of product had been removed from that area, and expressed concern as to getting the message to local residents and merchants.



This was posted in a Missouri newspaper that I read online. My ds used to eat the Lucas salt candy all the time. He hasn't bought any for a few years but it was very popular with the kids in elementary and middle school. Yikes!
