Is there something special in your area?
Asking Kim about the dolphins made me think that I bet everyone has something special that lives only in their area - like a flower or an animal. I am so fascinated by nature and I love to learn all about it through other people's eyes and experiences.
Here in Bennett we have antelope - not that unusual except that when I come out to feed the animals in the morning they are just laying in the hay watching me and they don't even move. It feels like I have an extra herd.
In Morrison along the foothills (west of Denver) Bob's parents have seven old magnificent male elk with huge 6-8 point racks that just lay in the yard while you hottub. And in Bailey I had a special rock I sat on and watched a black bear almost every morning (one day I watched her climb my deck and carefully pick off each one of my cherry tomatoes and eat them
and another time I watched her steal an ice cream bucket out of our garbage and run up the mountain with it.
So what do you have by you??

Wow kimmee that's fantastic!!
We have moose! We have Moose crossing signs on the highway. I have seen many since we have lived here and they are beautiful and HUGE! DH ran into one on a hike in the woods. DH just turned around quietly and walked slowly in a different direction...he said that the moose was over 9 feet tall!!

Well, we have deer that occasionally wander through town and we even have a cougar that will make her way in every now and then. When cats and small dogs come up missing in town, we know that the cougar has been around.

We have a flock (I guess they're called a flock) of sandhill cranes that hang out all around our house. They are on our property often or I'll see them flying over. Ds likes to 'talk' to them (they have the wildest scream and ds likes to mimick it back at them). They are an endangered species here.

Here along the coast we have dolphins as well. They escort the shrimp boats in to the docks so they can get their share of the trash fish that is thrown overboard when the shrimp is unloaded. The seagulls circle overhead waiting for their share as well, and the pelicans stand guard on the dock pilings, also waiting for a easy meal. We live a few miles inland from the coast and we have whitetail deer, raccoon, possum, fox, coyote, panther, small black bear, wild hogs, grey squirrels, white fox squirrel, flying squirrel, wild duck and geese. We have many species of birds, and I love them all, but I think my favorites are the hummers and the painted buntings. We also have several species of crane who make their way inland and they love our one pond that we keep "natural" and we enjoy watching them fish for frogs and small fish. We also have a momma gator and 3 baby gators that live in our pond. We will call DNR this spring to come and remove momma and babies for safety reasons, and transport them to a more remote location.

We have flocks of Canadian Geese that winter here. I also saw a bunch of wild turkeys while driving to work the other day. They were just standing next to the busy highway, about 7-10 of them. That is the first time I ever recall seeing turkeys in the city limits. We have plenty of deer around here too. They frequently get hit by cars when they cross the highways.

Nothing out of the ordinary here. We have coyotes that howl at night. I guess they are trying to sing you to sleep...........or asking you to step outside so they can eat.
They don't really bother humans, but they have killed the cattle around here. Then we have all the other animals you find in the country in Texas.

We have rattlesnakes!
Joking --I've never seen any --i'm sure they're around. Actually the rarest thing I've seen here has been the desert tortoise. One was just walking down our street one day ---we brought him in our back yard ----he ate some petunias ---then had a one track mind ---just started heading east - so we let him. It's a crime to keep them.

Oh yes, I forgot about the snakes. Several varieties of rattlers, coral snakes, king snakes, cotton mouth, you name it, we got it. Also wild turkey and quail.
