Smoke and Water Damage
You know how sometimes you wonder how bad things can get, take my word for it - really bad.
Yesterday Mel came home to find our house full of smoke. He rushed downstairs and found that instead of venting the smoke outside something had gone wrong with our woodstove and it had sent all the smoke into the house. Our woodstove is huge and is connected to the ductwork with vents all over the place. Then he turned around and saw water coming out the concrete wall of the unfinished part of the basement. He ran up to the top floor and found that a water pipe had burst in his bathroom. It had burst in the wall and was spewing water down the wall, into the garage and into the basement. Worse than a regular Monday! Thank God he came home in before it could get worse. So we had no water, still don't and had to use the heat pumps ($$$) all night. We did open doors for a while and ran fans and air cleaners but the house is still very smoky. This morning me and dd got up, brushed teeth with bottled water and let for school and work. We even ate breakfast out. My eyes are very irritated from the smoke and we smell like the smoke as well. Mel took off work and is home with all the doors and windows open trying to get the smell out. His first priority is to fix the water and the damage from it. Then he will tackle the woodstove. There was so much smoke that the fire alarms were even going off. So send good thoughts and fresh air our way please. Thank goodness the temperature is up today and we can make it without heat during the day so the house can air out. Looks like we will be using the heat pumps for a while and I hate that because it is so much more expensive. Oh well at least we are all safe.

Wow, when it rains it poors (literally, lol) Ok, sorry, guess that wasn't very funny. I'm so glad that it is just smoke and your house didn't catch fire! Good luck trying to clean up this huge "mess".

Hoping for a breeze to come and help push the smoke out of the house. And that the repairs are easy to do.

Thank you. How on earth did people use to live without running water? I want a shower so bad and it's only been one day.

No clue but my Amish neighbors do it!!!! We did sponge baths and drove the 30 miles to Moms to shower. We had no flushing pottys for 8 days either. We had to haul water to pour down the potty.Originally posted by paelthom
