Default Anyone else doing No Television?

DH and I were just talking about this last night, since we're at just about the 4 month mark. We sold our TV 4 months ago and have just lived without a television. We will sometimes go to my in-laws (for, say, the Superbowl) and watch TV/DVD's, and DH downloads each episode of 24 and watches it on his computer, but for the most part we're really ok with this (weird for a guy who's so into technology!) We sold the TV because we were moving cross-country and it was heavy, and our rent currently includes cable, so we could easily pick up the little TV we gave to his in-laws before we left just to have TV, but it somehow just doesn't seem worth it.

Anyone else currently going without television, either because of the money or for the sake of cutting back on commercialism?

The only TV I watch is American Idol. Otherwise, you will never catch me sitting in front of the TV. Dh has a TV in his Den and watches that, and the dd's have their own tv/cable. I don't even like to hear the TV on

At our summer place, we have one small TV with a DVD player. Usually the only time that is on, is when we rent a movie.

We still watch tv. but have threatened our kids with unplugging it. The kids (12 years old) get about an hour a day of their programming. The only network show I watch is LOST (!!!). On cable I watch HGTV, Discovery, NGC, BBCA, and movies. Still a junkie I guess!

When I was in high school (in the dark ages), our tv broke and stayed broken for a few months. It was during that period that I read Tolkien's Lord of the Rings -- otherwise I might not have ever read the whole thing.

I'm impressed with you all who are "going without".

    who has time for tv?

No clue here... i'm always working, schooling & cleaning the house ... too busy for tv unless i'm sick (like i am now) LOL!

last thing i watched on tv was American Chopper last night... cuz the remote was across the room & yes... i love bikes so I didnt care. And I'm surely not offended by the language... I could be everso much worse than they if i chose! LOL

but that was the first time I saw tv (only about 30 min of it) in easily a month if not more.

    Cool

We have been televisionless since Aug.9,2004 when we moved. We use the television for Netflix DVDs only. I can't say that I have missed it at all.

"I watch very little tv and I rent movies several times a month. I spend most of my "couch potato" time on the computer LOL"

    This sounds just like me!!!

I have gone without a TV for several months at a time a few times in the past 10 years, haven't had cable in 10 years, and don't really miss it. I watch the occasional local news in the evening, The Simpsons once in a while, and sometimes sports on Sunday if DBF is visiting. I do rent DVDs to watch movies.

I prefer to waste my time on the computer.........at least I am learning new things of MY choice rather than being spoon-fed what somebody else thinks I should see. Most of TV is an intellectual wasteland and geared primarily to induce us to SPEND MONEY ON USELESS C---. If I want news or culture I listen to NPR or AAR.

I personally watch very little TV (I am however watching Trading Spaces as I type! LOL!) Unfortunately it is almost always on in our house whether anyone is in front of it or not. DH lives to plop on the couch and watch tv. I recently bought some games and I am trying to start a "turn off the tv and let's play a game" time.

We cut out our cable over 6 months ago, so we have no television at all. We don't even get the basic stations because we don't have an antenea. This was a conscious choice for both of us because we don't like all of the reality television that's on. The television stations we do like are the History channel, HGTV and Discovery, but we can't just buy three stations. We do however watch movies on the weekend. We are memebers of Netflix. But during the week we usually don't have time to turn on a movie before 9:00PM and then, by that time, we are too tired.

    Default Yes

We just got rid of ours about 2 months ago. It has been like to the kids but all in all it has been a good thing.

We are trying to be more and more media free. Sometimes they'll go to G-ma's to watch a dvd which I don't mind as long as it is non violent sensual rude with respect to parents (yikes that is a long list lol)

Commercialism is a big no no. It is so much easier if children aren't around it (adults too). Children don't have the coping capablities that we do and we shouldn't expect them to.

We try to limit t.v but we still have one. We have what's called "lifeline" cable - as if you couldn't live without it! Most days it's off but we watch The Amazing Race, Survivor, Lost, Alias, & the new Law & Order. Dd only watches Dvds we get at the Library (Blue's Clues, Clifford, etc.) for 30 minutes in the morning. We do not let her watch regular t.v. Dh watches lots of movies from the library but I cut down on those too. I love old movies but the stuff coming out today is
