    Smile Porch sitting

Wish this house had a porch.

I especially miss sitting on my old porch swing. This one was made of steel and had two canvas covered cushions one to sit one & one against your back. This was big enough for one person to sleep comfy on or 4 adults to sit. Most of the time though it held two adults and 2 children that were enjoying a story being read to them or just watching the world go by. Those were the days.

I remember sitting on the porch really late at night since my grandparents home had no air conditioning for years. We'd all sit out there and just be quiet, soaking in the sounds of bugs and frogs. I loved that porch so much. I am blessed to have a porch now and it's one of my fav places to sit and read when it's warm enough. We have a back deck as well, but I just prefer my front porch. Guess that's a part of me that will never go away.

Thanks for bringing back happy memories.

I remember porch sitting at a neighbor of my Gran's...Mr. and Mrs. Peterson's. Of an evening, they would sit on the porch and Laura and I would run to sit on the steps and talk with them.

Mrs. Peterson would go in to bring us a glass of lemonaid and a cookie. We would keep them company until Gran called us in for the night.

Their home was torn down about 10 yrs after Gran passed on but I still remember warm summer evenings porch sitting w/ the Peterson's.

    Thanks, Darlene.

Happy memories of porch sitting for me, too. At my parents' house they have a huge porch with a swing and wicker furniture. In their neighborhood, everyone sits out on their porches and visits in the evenings- you just stroll over to someone else's porch, or sit and relax on your own. We used to swing and read and visit the night away out there.

I'm a porch sitter, although we call ours "the verandah". It's such a great place to sit and ponder, to sew, to talk to the dogs or to just watch the bugs go by. I can't say I watch the world go by out there because we only get 2 and a half cars drive down here a day, sometimes less.

My verandah has seen some momentous events in my recent life. When I closed down my business and didn't know what I was going to do, I sat on the verandah until I worked it out. When my dogs ran away about 5 years ago and Rosie came back covered in thousands of ticks, she had to go to the vet hospital with a drip and when she came home I made a recovery ward for her on the verandah. She fully recovered. My son Shane asked me to accompany him to the verandah while he told me he was moving out. My son Kerry brought his first girlfriend home and we got acquainted on the verandah. After my sister's husband died, she came to visit and we spent hours drinking tea and talking on the front verandah.

I could go on for hours telling you the important events that have taken place out there, but I won't, you get the general idea.

Now I sit out there with my sewing. I bring the dogs out from the back and after they have a good sniff around the front yard, and even though the gate is wide open, they come back and sit with me on the verandah. One on each side of my chair like the guard cats on a Pharaoh's tomb. My cat Hettie wanders by sometimes and joins the gang.

Last night, just as I started cleaning up from dinner, my best friend, Kathleen, phoned from 2000 kms away. I wandered automatically to the verandah, sat in my wicker chair, talking, while my DH cleaned up the kitchen. We talked for 45 minutes. Kathleen actually asked me if I was out on the verandah, she knows me well.

I love sitting outside and enjoying the evening air. We grew up sitting on the porch at my grandparents, they had a porch swing that was replaced several times over the years because we completely wore them out. They had several comfy chairs on the porch and summer nights were spent swinging and visiting and us children chasing lightening bugs and keeping them in mayo jars with holes punched in the lids.

I love sitting on my porch and reading a good book with a tall glass of ice cold lemonade at my side. The kids also enjoy being read to on our porch.

I'd love to have a wraparound porch someday. Now *those* are really nice
