I read in a post that you are a low carber. I have been on my own version of this lifestyle for just shy of 2 years and I feel and look better than I have in a LONG TIME. I finally got hubby hooked on this way of life at the new year and he is down 30 pounds!
What do you follow?

I was diagnosed DM type 2 in march of 2000 and put on a low/modified carb diet. I went from an 18 to a size6.
I dont really follow a specific plan as far as the diet books etc. I do low glycemic carbs and lots of protein.
I fell off the wayside for a bit on eatting properly (but didnt quit exercising) due to tons of stress and regained some ( currently back in 10). I'm currently taking the gain back off. I could kick myself for doing it! I was really stressed/depressed and just didnt care!
I bet you and hubby both feel great!!! We will have to swap ideas and tips!
So what plan are you and hubby following?~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

Wow! That is quite an acomplishment! I hope you are able to keep it off!

It is SO much easier now that my hubby is eating like I am. I am at my goal weight so I don't count carbs anymore, just try to make good choices. Hubby just eats whatever I eat so he follows that too.
We follow our own plan!
We have taken what we have read on low carb diets, and add it with what we like and what makes us feel good. It took some experimenting, but here is what works for us:
We avoid sugar, but treat ourselves occasionally to ice cream or something. We try not to use products high in sugar alcohols either. They don't bother me (I am at my goal weight) but they stall hubby.
We don't eat pasta, rice, or potatoes. We do use tortillas and bread, but only for wraps or sandwiches. We make sure to load them with greens and protiens when we do use them.
Instead of skipping meals when we are short on time we drink protien shakes.
We treat ourselves with fresh fruit (except bananas).
For us we have to have healthy snacks on hand. We eat alot of cashews, almonds, strawberries, baby carrots, roast beef with cream cheese... things like that.
We get creative with recipies. Try new things so we don't get bored.
Before I was at my goal weight, I would carb rotate also. I would eat like I do now for a few days, then drop back down to the traditional low carb foods for 3-4 days. I think that prevented me from stalling. My hubby is considering doing this to get his last 15 pounds off.
What tips do you have?

I guess my biggest tip is to not ever skimp on the veggies! I do use a lc board but notice so many people try for ages to stay ultra low carb. I just cant see how an extra brocoli or apple is bad.
I also really believe in exercise. I've been a faithful exerciser since 2000.
I did really good until about a year to year and a half ago keeping it off and controlling my BG's. I think seriously if not for an unfortunate chain of events I wouldnt have regained at all. Life was just turmoil. My poor father was terminally ill and had a psychotic reaction to two drugs they later said shouldnt have ever been mixed. He injured my Mother (please bearin mind in almost 40 yrs of marriage hed never hardly yelled at Mom . It was 100% a bad drug mistake), my father couldnt deal with the guilt and swore some how he should have known what was happening. He ended his life. 2 moths later our only Aunt died. My Mom fell apart and I was lefyt to handle way too much. Next Grandma passed. Poor all of us but my poor Mom had lost her husband, only sister and Mother in record time. I completely did what needed to be done for everyone and everything but could really care less about taking care of me. I'm not sure but I'm guessing it was a bit of stress, grief and depression all rolled into one.
Everything is so much better now! I have to remind myself not to feel bad about regaining some. I feel so great eatting properly!!!
My family shares some of the LC thing but still eat to much junk! I've just learned to have healthy alternatives.
I do occasionally eat bread but only whole grain. Same with tortillas.
I dont really count my carbs per say but just stick to the healthy stuff. I did try a meat fast with some others on a lc board and hated it! I really ought to count closer. I figure It took a bit to gain it back so I'm not rushing expecting it to come off.
So you'll have to tell me how carb cycling works for hubby if he tries it.
Did you notice a big grocery increase with LC?
I really hadnt in all of 2000- later 2004 but now yikes!~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

I am sorry to hear of all the trials in your family
It sounds like you were there for your mother when she needed you most
I think you did wonderful to get through all that, weight gain or not!
Yes our groceries do cost more. Hubby even noticed that to eat healthy and fresh seems to cost more than when our cabinets were loaded with convience items. I don't spend much on meats, I buy all from the frozen mark down section. Lettuce here last week was almost $3 a pound
But we use so much that it's something we have to overlook.
I hope that with spring coming we can get better prices on our veggies and fruits. I eat strawberries almost daily and they are breaking me! Just a small cup at night but they are in my opinion the earth's most perfect food
I use some of these recipies as inspiration to try new things...

We also have gotten different cookbooks and even a LC slow cooker book!

I'll have to give that link a look! Thanks!
Oh I love berries too! I have berry plants in the summer if I beat the rabbitts~
Lettuce $3 yikes!!!!! I dont eat tons of lettuce it like a dollar here though. I love love love cabbage, brocoli etc.
I check the mark down meat also. Lately even the mark down are high though! Our neighbor does beef and we could trade the 150 we charge him to rent the field for beef but I just cant eat if after I've meet them and petted them over the fence!
I try to really stock up when there is sale. The Amish around us sell eggs but they are actually cheaper atb the store 30 miles away so I stock up there after work.
It is more $$$ but our health is worth it! Do you take supplements also?
I take a b, a c, primrose ,calcium mag mix and just added milk thistle.~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

I just take the carb smart vitamins (when I can remember) and flaxseed oil pills. I drink milk or have yogurt daily so I don't supplement any calcium. When I go back to the doc I am gonna ask for prenatal vitamins to take cause I can get them for free.
That is true... I don't know if I could eat something I pet
I might feel different when I have 5 teenagers to feed
