Guess what I just did?
DH has been wanted to dye his hair green for a long time. I want to dye my hair purple. Unfortunately, we're not college students or starving artists so we've chosen not to.
Because DH got a letter today informing him that he did not get the last job he applied for, and in honor of him being unemployed for 6 months, we went out, bought the dye and bleach, and dyed it green. And I mean green like the grass! He's got about 5 more minutes until we wash it out and I can't wait! It's also the first time I've ever dyed anyone else's hair (I've done my own - normal colors - like a million times). I'll post pics if I can get him to send me some (of course, we're documenting every step with the digital camera).
This is our fun weekend date night project for this week!Loving wife to DH (8/31/03) and Mommy to Owen Alexander (9/20/06)

You could make a postcard of a pic of him and a caption that says "I'm green with envy" to send around next year on St. Patricks' Day. I'm sure your family would love that.
I do my own highlights in my hair and can do just about anything that anyone wants done to their hair..... . Did you wear the rubber gloves, I'm imagining you with green fingers.....

Well, the bleach kit came with gloves but not the green stuff - fortunately I have a box of rubber gloves underneath the sink. I really don't want green fingers!
It was actually very disappointing. It came out "blond with a hint of green" last night, and by this morning it was more strawberry blond. DH has dark red hair, so the red kind of came back this morning. We've decided to give it a week to recover, and we'll do it again next week. This time we'll let the bleach sit longer (we only did the bare minimum this time) and wait longer between the bleach and the green.Loving wife to DH (8/31/03) and Mommy to Owen Alexander (9/20/06)

sara, I love it! One of my sons did this a few years ago when he was going to a Greenday concert. He went to the hairdresser, had his hair bleached and then dyed green. His hair was fairly light to start with. The hairdresser patched it up a bit with green spray of some sort.
My DH almost collapsed when he saw it, I loved it. I hope you both enjoy your new colours.

I do my sons dark hair grren, fuschia, blue etc. I'm also a stylist. Bleach is hair o a white or very pale yellow. Shampoo bleach out. Do not condition hair (It closes the cutical which you dont want). Dry hair and immediately put the green in.

I've always wanted blue hair. I mentioned it to my boss and he said I better not. I objected with "Well, if Millie can have florescent orange hair, why can't I have have blue?" (Millie is a resident in our nursing home) He glared at me and as soon as I can figure out how to get my hair to STAY blue, I am dying it!

Ok, we just redid it last night. As soon as I can get DH to send me the pics (should be tonight) I'll post them. Here's what we did differently this time:
1. Used more developer fluid in the bleach kit (it was a "mix the powder with the developer")
2. Washed hair TWICE before adding the color (and we did not use conditioner - I just picked a bottle of regular suave)
3. Actually combed the green after putting it in instead of brushing it
And it looks pretty good!
What was most funny is this time we did it at a friend's house - DH has a radio show on Sat. nights so we did it "on air" with 3 other DJ's just laughing and making fun of him. But at the end of the night 2 of them agreed that it looked really good and said that they wanted to do it now!
Thanks for the advice, rodmick - do you have any advise for how to keep it in? Its a Manic Panic semi-permanent (Electic Lizard). I just told him not to wash it today or tomorrow, and not to use the Selsun Blue he had been using, to use my shampoo for color-treated hair. Anything else he should do?Loving wife to DH (8/31/03) and Mommy to Owen Alexander (9/20/06)

The only things to do are like you said use a good shampoo for colored hair, condition after every shampoo and rinse in cold water to close the cuticle of the hair shaft.
Glad he likes it! Now so when are you doing yours?! You did sAY PURPLE RIGHT?~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

What is your DH's occupation, or desired occupation? I hope the green hair will not hinder his job search. Some hiring managers might not like the color as much as you do. Where we live, the job market is so tight that employers here are saying that they prefer to have at least 35 applicants for each opening, and usually they get more, sometimes alot more. Competing for one job. I suppose having green hair would make him stand out from the crowd.
