I just need to vent!!!!!!!!!
<DIV>What A SAD SAD Day! I'm so mad that people are hurtful for no reason!!!
We found one of my two ducks dead at the end of the driveway. Dh said from where it was laying and where the blood was that someone actually had to swerve/pull part into the driveway to hit it!
I have no idea what freak would get a thrill out of killing a hand raised pet!!!!!!!! All our neighbors and people in the area actually slow down to talk to them in the yard.
I was so angry and upset! I raised both my duck from hatchlings!!!!!!! And they are as friendly and tame as the dogs.
I was so worried about the duck that was left being all alone as they are always right next to each other. Dh took me to the feed store to inquire about another after he buried my pet. The feed store couldnt get them this time of year but gave us suggestions. The first one was a farm about 18 miles away. No ducks there. They sent us to some Amish up near our home. None there but the Amish man sent us to his BIL's. Nope, he was out but sent us to his relitives house. He had adult and baby Moscovy ducks. Dh ran me around almost 2 hrs to do this. If that wasn't love I don't know what is!
We paid him and took my new baby Mucky ( he was black with mud) home . So far my adult Peking duck is scared of the week old duck so we locked them up together so she can't run away. I so hope they take to each other like the other duck was.
I live in a town of under 1000. I am putting an ad in the paper thanking (sarcasticly here!) the jerk who came into my drive and ran over my pet!
About a year ago another guy had the same thing happen to his tied in the drive dog. Darn idiots! How on earth can people be so cruel???</DIV>
<DIV> Besides the $ for the duck I also had to get duckling starter feed. Muckys cute and I want a companion for my other duck (since some jerk killer her companion!) so it's cash very well spent!</DIV><!-- / message --><!-- sig -->~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

I'm sorry you lost your pet, rodmick. I wonder what makes some people tick. I think people who are cruel must live horrible lives. I hope your new baby settles in well and that the older duck isn't too scared by the new addition. It must be hard to lose your companion like that.

I'm sorry. We had a neighbor swerve into our driveway and ran over our dog and killed it when I was a kid. My dad bout whipped the neighbor. I hope you find out who did that, or maybe you're better off not knowing.

I am sorry you lost your ducks. How cruel can one person be?

I am sorry for your loss. Pets are so much more than "just animals". They really feel like part of our family. Hopefully your adult duck will realize the baby is not going to hurt her, and they will become friends. Blessings to you, your family, and your ducks.

I'll never understand how a person could hurt an animal in any way.
I'm sorry you had to go through all that.

Thanks to all of you for repllying and understanding she was a pet and not just a duck! I hope I didn't make a mistake with the baby I got. Please let it be female!!! I'm not real familar with this breed so I got a book at the library this afternoon. It said the female were wonderful docile pets but that the makes could be very agressive like geese. Our fenced part of the yard is where the duck are most of the time. The dogs also play and do their business out there.
I'm thinking maybe I will keep looking for a female( older so we can tell!) to go along with the baby and our older duck. 3 is just fine! In case the new baby muscovy does turn out to be an agressive male I can always give him to the Amish man who gave him to me. I must say though all the Muscovy ducks in his yard seemed quite docile!!
Edited to add..
I wasn't sure if this little ducking would be ok in the dog house at night yet as it's getting pretty chilly. So the little cuties sleeping in a box in the house. Anyone have a clue how old it needs to be to sleep outside without its mother?~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

rodmick I've only ever owned muschovy and applegates. but I can assure you, you are on a winner .
They are large freindly ducks who are good breeders and the mothers are extremely homely (you won't go wrong there)
Ok they aren't the most attractive ducks but you can train them like a dog. In terms of feeding and friendliness.
If you have kids this is the duck for a little one, they are extremely loyal to who ever they have the most contact with. And they will protect them. (like a goose)
You're lucky you stumbled across a muschovy! Luv em!
Don't worry if you have a male, they are great watch dogs. mine have picked up intruders well before our dogs have.

Oh Megsy thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That made me feel alot better! The book I read made them sound horrible! Our other remaining duck is a female Peking. If I have a male I will be taking all the eggs away. I couldn't give the babies awy thinking they might be eatten (silly but true!)
Do you have any idea how old the baby has to be to sleep out in the duck house with the other mature duck? We are in Wisconsin so the nights are getting cooler. I suppose I could have Dh righ up the winter heat lamp . I just worry keeping it in the house it will imprint on us and not the other duck. I had him outside today with supervision but he can fit through the holes in the fence so he needs watching.
I do have a 3x4 cage to leave him out in the yard unsupervised though.
Any advice is very welcome! I never worried about the imprinting thing before aS we bought the original two as a pair.
I worried about the mean thing though as I'd previously hand raised a Gray Talouse goose. Upon full maturity she got extremly agressive to my youngest child. I had to give her to a lady with other geese but no small children. It was just heartbreaking to give her away! Unfortunately her strongest imprint was on our dog. To this day she hangs with her new owners dogs and only another goose for mating.~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

I'm sorry that you lost your duck in such a terrible way. A pox on whoever did it.
Hope everything works out nicely with your new addition.

Sorry about your duck.
I hope your grown duck adjusts to the baby well and they make nice companions for each other. I'd love to see a picture of them.
