    Default Oooh! I was BAD at the grocery store!

    This morning, I ran in for a couple of things on the way home from my walk.

    Spent $8.

    Then, I was making coleslaw for tonight and I RAN OUT OF MAYO!

    Well, I had to run an activity fee over to the scout leader, so I knew I could duck in to the grocery store quickly.

    As I was going in, one of the baggers said, "Hi. A lot of people are coming to the meat sale!"

    Any meat you could stuff in a brown paper bag would be 25% off. Today and tomorrow only. But you need an additional $25 purchase.

    Boneless rump roasts were $1.99/lb. Now, this store often runs out of their best sales. They'll give a raincheck, but I doubted that they'd restock the $1.99 roasts this weekend.

    I fit a 3-lb roast, and 2 4-lb roasts into the bag. Also 2 4-lb packages of b/s chicken breasts. After the discount, the rump roasts were $1.50/lb; the chicken breasts were $1.35.

    That's 19 lbs of boneless meat for around $32!

    Then, for the extra $25. Mayo, 5 lbs butter, 4 gallons of milk, 2 onions, and some frozen veggies.

    My bill came to $57. Not bad, but I didn't NEED to spend it.

    And I realized I had a $5 off $50 coupon that I HAD LEFT AT HOME!!!!

    My freezer is so stuffed! I put the chicken breasts in there, but I'm hoping to get DH to do a roast beef cooking session!

    Well, I guess there are worse sins. But I was counting on having empty space in the freezer for when turkeys go on sale!

    Hey I think you hit the jackpot. It's not often you find that sort of meat sale. (too bad about that $5 coupon though, that would have made you feel better I do stuff like that all the time.)

    The really BAD BAD BAD part is that I just re-juggled the budget.

    I COULD go spend another $25 tomorrow .... and fill another bag w/ meat. If they're restocking the roasts, I'd expect them to hit the counter around 9 a.m.

    So, w/ butter at $2/lb, I could get 10 butters, some apples, and a bag of meat for around $57. And still squeak by w/ the budget!

    WHERE WOULD I PUT IT THOUGH! Time to re-arrange freezer contents!

    Default I went again today!

    UPDATE:

    Today I planned better and went again. The whole family was along, and the ONLY extra thing that got added was the pumpkin pie filling -- and I needed that to get up to the $50.

    I bought
    in the 25% off bag
    * 12 lb b/s chick breasts (3 pkgs)
    * 40-oz salmon fillet portions

    That came to $21 -- after sales and discounts.

    I would have bought more chick breasts, but they were out.

    I needed an additional $25 beyond the bag to qualify for the discount.

    And I needed to get up to a $50 total to use the $5 off coupon.

    So, for my remaining $29, I bought

    * 12 Progresso soups (the kids like them for lunch)
    * 3 lb butter
    * 4 lb jumbo apples
    * 3 jars gravy (I haven't yet succeeded it making it well)
    * 2 lb bananas
    * 2 bags caramels (free after coupon)
    * 2 cans pumpkin pie filling
    * 2 loaves Roman Meal bread

    My total for everything ... after coupons and discounts ... came to $46.13.

    Oh, Shannon, if you saw my freezer, you'd think I was BAD!

    I had to haul out a ham to make room for Friday's shopping spree! In the 2nd fridge, I now have to cook -- ham (from the freezer), 2 roasts (from Friday), 12 lbs of chicken (from Saturday), and about 3 lbs of chicken (that I pulled down Thur to begin thawing!).

    That fridge also contains 7 GALLONS of milk! I was buying milk to qualify for the first deal ... and I went a bit overboard.

    I am going to have to COOK a lot this week! And somehow figure out how to freeze some of those meals!

    [ Actually, I can still make some room in the freezer of the kitchen fridge. And, from my OAMC reading, I know that meals can be frozen flat in ziplocks. So I have hope! ]

    If only DH would use up some of HIS freezer stuff! He's got 25 lbs of green chili and 3 pkgs of pre-made burgers (for a cookout at his work)! But this week, they're having a Thanksgiving-themed potluck, and burgers don't say 'Thanksgiving.'

    Anyway, I'm happy to have such a 'problem'!
