Another Scotti Update- Long, some good, some bad.
Here is another update on Scotti from her great aunt. Her GA says she is really enjoying all the mail she is getting and it is one of the only thing lifting her spirits sometimes. If anyone else is interested in sending her a card, please PM me for her address.
"This happened Monday: Yesterday was a very long and exhausting day for everyone. She made it through her surgery well. Scotti had toes removed this morning. The surgery took 2 1/2 hours. Nine toes were removed at the first or second joint. The doctors also took skin from her hip to graft on her arms and hands. When she woke, the nurse said she was crying out in pain. The doctor also talked about not waiting on the "Scotti" skin to come from Boston, but using skin from her back. Right now her back and head are the only places that do not hurt and the donor site is said to be more painful than the burn. We may ask to wait on the skin from Boston. Please pray for Scotti as the next few days will be very difficult due to the new pain area. Also pray for her and us as we have to decide when to tell her about her toes. We did talk with the doctor and the skin will come from Boston and from her back, it is not an either or deal.
We got to go back to see Scotti at the 5 pm visiting hour and she was in pretty good spirits! Praise God! She was so brave! When she was in pain you could see her face go real pale, and then she would squirm around, and then she would cry out when she could take it no longer. She would try to be so brave! G was reading her mail (her highlight of the day) to her and when she would hurt she would keep listening to G. She told G a few night ago not to stop reading when she cried out to just read to her through the pain. She is so determined to beat this! And she will! Scott took her balloons in that Mrs.Christie and Jeremey Jones and their family sent up for her. G showed Scotti what one of the balloons did, when you bump the HUGE balloon it would play Don't Worry Be Happy! Scotti got a big kick out of that one! So did her nurses. Thanks to the Jones family for those balloons. That visit lifted up our spirits so much! Daddy was so worried and still is about his Scotti Chelle! Along with the rest of us.
This happened Tuesday: Scotti is going to OR this morning... to trim what they need to from the last joint of the toes.... so please pray for those toes this morning... Scotti was really "down" this weekend... she was sad when her dad left, she was sad because she doesn't receive mail on the weekends... (so they are now holding some mail back to open on the weekends)... they discovered that she was asking for pain meds-- not for pain, but because it made her sleep... so they have called in a psychologist to talk to her today to help with her depression... She hasn't eaten much all weekend...
Scotti is in recovery and the doctor didn't do anything to the toes, but he left them open. He will remove the dead part of the toes Wednesday morning... He closed up the incision that he made from the middle of her thigh to her feet on each side of her leg (both legs) and the incisions he made on top of her feet (top to bottom) when she first got to the hospital. The incisions were made to prevent the swelling from putting too much pressure on the arteries and veins; thereby causing poor to no circulation in the lower legs and feet... He is also going to start grafting skin on her arms this week and has ordered her leg skin, which will be at the hospital in 2 to 2 1/2 weeks and then he will begin grafting skin on her legs... He said that Scotti may be going home the end of the month or first week in December (PRAISE GOD) He said unless something bad happens, she will definitely be home for Christmas!!!!! "

I think of Scotti every day. I hope she can recover from this, both mentally and physically. I sent her some worry dolls, I hope they arrived.

Thanks so much for your continued cards- I know they are really helping keep her spirits up.
Rhonda, I don't think her great aunt knows what has arrived for her, otherwise I would ask. She lives quite far from her and Scotti is only allowed minimal visitors because of the risk of infection, so extended family is trying to allow her immediate family as much time with her as possible....

Can she use her hands? I was thinking what kind of gift to send her? Coloring books, markers? What do you think?

Shannon- I'm not sure about the hand thing now. I know that a couple weeks ago when I first posted, she could NOT use her hands, so my guess is that use of her hands is still very limited. I know that people have been reading to her, and she can listen to CDs.
Thanks, everyone! You're all the greatest for reaching out like this to someone you don't know.
BTW, there are now pictures of her at the caringbridge site if you would like to see what she looked like pre-accident.
Go to www.caringbridge.com and click on view (or visit?) In the box where you would put in the URL, type scottiroberts and her page should come up.

I'm such a dope sometimes! I was just sitting here thinking, "where could I find a little book to send her?" when I remembered all those Angelina Ballerina books I got a few weeks ago. I wonder if se has a DVD player in her room- one collection came with a DVD, too.

Is she allowed to eat candy/treats? Maybe a game? Or, I could always send her some books. Did you mention before she was nine?
How about starting a Scotti thread? I'm not sure if that is the right term. You know, a sub-category, so that way, all your posts and updates can be easily accessed. Maybe some of the new people might like to join her by sending her cards.
