My boys get the full week off also and I think it's a bit much. Since they do have these extra days and they have makeup days due to hurricane Rita, they should use a couple of these this year.

Mine gets out early wed & then thur & fri off. We have a winter break, too.

We had a tornado last year that wiped out the school. They didn't start until October & I'm pretty sure they still had thursday & friday off. We lost a few "normal" vacation days, but they schedule way more instruction time than is required.

Also, in the city, the kids are on a 9 week on, 1 week off type of schedule....I think that week off will fall sometime around now. Maybe that's similar to what your grandson's school is doing.

Our school district also ends early on Wednesday and is off Thursday and Friday.

I wondered if the week off at Thanksgiving might be because of a different type of schedule --- different from quarters and semesters.

We homeschool so only Thursday is a free day for us.

A girl I went to high school with is a teacher in GA and she told me a couple of months ago that they take the entire week off. I asked why (since we only got Thurs. and Fri. off when we were in school) and she said it was because so many parents had complained that they needed the entire week due to traveling.

Where I teach, (public school) we have 1/2 day on Wednesday and then Thursday and Friday off. The area private schools have the whole week off, but they don't have attendance requirements like we do, so they have lots of weeks and random days off throughout the year.

Ds gets out early on Wednesday (it is Grandparent's day and his grade school celebrates and lets the kids out early) and then has Thursday and Friday off. Dd is in college and only has Thursday and Friday.

DH is a public school teacher. They get off 1/2 Wed, Thurs, Friday off.

Were I grew up we got the week off. It was the first week of deer season and they had trouble with teachers, bus drivers, and students taking "sick" days so they gave up with having school.
