    Default DH, gifts, and the SHARE grocery co-op

    Whenever DH appreciates my frugal efforts, I am thrilled.

    Today, we were all sitting around after lunch, eating some of the 'chocolate mint delights' that I'd ordered through SHARE. (Lots more info about the whole program at www.sharecolorado.com).

    Well! We all liked the mints -- they taste like Peppermint Patties. Then we got talking about whether or not they were a good deal.

    My 6 oz box of SHARE mints cost $2.
    A 5.1 oz box of Peanut Butter Dreams, sold as a fundraiser by the Girl Scouts, cost around $4.

    So, we decided that our SHARE treats WERE a good deal.

    "Too bad," I said. "If I had known that we wanted more, I could have placed an order 2 hours ago. Now, I'd have to do an online order, and there's a $1.50 surcharge for online orders."

    Well, we talked about it. DH decided he'd like some of the mints for work. And some to take when we visit his family. And I figured I could use a couple more boxes for gift baskets.

    So, I got online to order 10 more boxes ($21.50). We figured the surcharge was worthwhile for so many boxes. THEN ... DH looked at the other Holiday Gift Items.

    He added

    * Tea Tin Crate ($12)
    * Sausage Fest ($13)
    * Cheese Fest ($11)

    He'll take them in to work.

    My total order came to $57.50. Which isn't bad, when you consider that he'll be able to provide a classy-looking cheese and sausage snack for his office. And some candies. And candies for his folks. And my gift baskets. Oh! And I think the cheese fest comes with a cutting board, which he'll just leave at the office for future snacks.

    Also, DH seems to enjoy preparing/bringing snacks to work. This way, he can do it at a reasonable cost -- and maybe spread the word that the SHARE co-op has good stuff. (Overcoming the 'charity-type' image.)

    So, is it win-win, or did we go overboard?

    Oh, yes. Their slogan is "If you eat, you qualify."

    They do ask for some volunteer service in your community, but those requirements are loose (at least in our SHARE office). For example, you can pray -- and it counts. You can help out on distribution day (I do that), and it counts. You can pick up trash on the sidewalk, while you're out for your walk -- that counts.

    I was just feeling like I'd spent a LOT of $$$. On non-necessities.

    But, this way, when we go to Sam's Club next, DH won't be saying, "Let's get THIS snack tray for my office!" I'll be able to remind him of our order coming in on the 17th.

    Sounds like you did good on it! Where can you find the "share program"? I know we have it here but could not find one in our area and I have seen the "flyers" for iit but, can't find the site to find more info on it. May be worth checking into for us right now.
    Are the sites only listed b state or is there a "main" program and go from there? Sorry if these questions are silly, just chalk it up to my brain damaged or as dh likes to say these days, being a blonde

    Here's a site that someone on one of my boards found:

    http://www.sharefood.us/bbs/

    Maybe that site will be able to guide you to a nearby option.

    It does change monthly. In fact, they're quite different in different regions. Just look at our menu at www.sharecolorado.com quite a bit different!
