Question Hand Held Pie Makers - Help!

While shopping last week, I bought a can of Comstock Apple Pie Filling. Not sure why, maybe because it was there. Anyway I remembered that I used to make sandwich pies with a hand held 'pie maker'. I may have made up the name but it was used over the stove gas flame. You used two slices of plain white bread for the crust and put pie filling or stuff in like ham and cheese, peanut butter and bananas, etc. I used to make blueberry pies. My secret was making scrambled egg with cheese pies late at night for a snack. I never told anyone because it was so weird. As I am typing this, I realize that those breakfast egg pockets they now sell are pretty much the same thing.

I went digging for the one I knew that I had, and can't believe that I found it . Is anyone else familiar with these items? Do you know the real name? I think they were also advertised on TV many years ago.

    Thanks.

I see the type that are electric at the thrift store ocasionally. I have thought of buying one...
    A couple of questions:
Does it make the bread taste like a grilled sandwich? Kind of fried on the outside and soft on the inside?
Does it flatten out the bread so that it is thin?
Have you ever tried it with homemade bread?

We use pie irons all the time for camping. They work great! The real heavy duty, cast iron ones are the ones that last the longest. Believe me, we are on our third one. Different types of sandwiches we make are, pizzas, eggs sandwiches, grilled cheese, jam, etc.

    Hi Lacy,

    >Yes, the result is sort of like a grilled sandwich or pie.

    >The bread does not flatten out. It is just formed to the shape of the pie "iron". I just learned that they are called pie irons form Darlene's post I went to the site she gave and found my round one.

    > I have never tried it with homemade bread, but I did see some recipes, did not have a chance to read them yet, but will save the link.

These are such fun things. I think you should take a chance and buy one the next time you see it. Especially if you have young children.

    Michelle,

My mouth is open. You are on your third one?? Wow. I had stuck mine in the "why did I buy this" drawer. I will be using mine a lot from now on.

I have an electric one similar to the ones on the site, it has a place for 2 sandwiches. We used it all the time when the kids were home for quick snacks, we made lots of pizza pockets with pizza sauce a couple of slices of pepperoni and some mozzarella cheese. We love the hot ham and cheeses from them too.

Vannie, the reason we went through ours so fast is because they were cheaply made. We got a good heavy duty one this time. Also, when we go camping there are about 6 people using our pie iron, so it gets lots of use!
