Slow loading pages?
Is it me, or is the Village slow loading these last couple of days? It seems to take longer & longer to load the pages...with every other site I visit, clicking links are almost instantaneous (cable internet). But for the last couple days, here at the Village clicking to read a post takes 10-15 seconds to switch pages.
Like I said, it's only here though...

Check Sara's announcement; has to do with the server.

I think it's cause Sara is doing some work around here. I know I read a thread about it somewhere, probably in the announcements! It's doing the same for me and I have cable internet too!

Sara's announcement was dated Dec. 30th. I don't think she is having server problems now. I'll let her know about this.

It's very slow for me right now and intermittently the past week or so. That's partly why I condensed the forums to load more quickly. In the meanwhile, all the full pm boxes, tickers and images are very large and many are hosted on outside servers and that really slows things down.
We're also due for a major update to all the software on the site and that will help tremendously.
I'm going to reboot the server and will optimize the databases late tonight and check with our server manager and see what's currently going on because it's very slow for me at the moment, as well.If you'd like to help support Frugal Living by Sara Noel, my syndicated column, e-mail, write, or call the managing editor at your local newspaper and ask them to publish it in print or online. Do we need to pare down our signatures? I have 3 tickers but I didn't realize they could be causing everyone trouble. I'll lose them or pare them down if you want.

Gabe,
So, if we give a web address to a photo located on another site, that slows down the thread? Is there a better way to do it?

Seems much better now, Gabe. The pages are actually loading, and for a while there, I wasn't able to get them to load at all (can't imagine what the people with dial-up were dealing with!)
Thanks!

I'll reindex the searches tonight too and that should help.
Yes. When linking images from other sites and putting them in signatures, that definitely slows things down a ton. You can turn off images in signatures and in avatars in your preferences to speed things up. Another option is not having images in your signatures or making them smaller.
Same with avatars. Some are pretty large. If there's a thread with let's say 5 replies in it, you're loading a ton of images in each thread.
There are some threads here that have more images to load than the entire main page of FV and that's just a single thread.
I've always been generous with the sizes of images here, but that may have to change to size restrictions in the future if things continue to be so slow loading for everyone. I don't want that.
I'll reindex the searches and see how that helps.
