Sign Language
Does anyone here sign? If so, what made you learn how to sign?
I have always wanted to learn. I can sign the alphabet which I learned in the fourth grade but that's it!

I know very little of the letters but know a few food items. They had taught my son when he was 6 or 7 to help him communicate better so I learned a little.

I'm going to school to be an ASL interpreter.
I learned some sign at church camp- many years ago, and it piqued my interest. I really wanted to be a deaf ed teacher, but that required far more college than my parents could afford at the time.
Then later-- my nephew (at age 13) lost his hearing-- he signs, and we're glad I sign, so I can communicate with him (he's now 27 years old.

I took a sign language class when I was younger. I've been brushing up here lately, teaching the girls signs. I read everything I can about ASL and the current theories. I'd love to know and do more!

My grandson is 8 and has downs....and he signs..... His teach tells me he is great at it.... If she forgets one all she does is ask him and he tells her..... He is teaching me.......... He shows me in sign then he says it... Then when I do it he tell me good girl..... He's great........
FernYes I'm out of my mind. It's a dark and scary place in there.

I don't sign, but I took some ASL classes in college. I do pretty well with languages anyway, but a lot of sign is pretty easy because they are like moving pictographs. Some of my favorite are bacon (which I would never eat, but the wiggly fingers a fun) old (picture me pulling on my goatee) and milk (milking a cow, of course!)
What I remember most is spelling out L-O-L-A all the time, which was the name of the adjunct or professor or whatever she was. LOL (A!)

It's something I've always been interested in doing but have never learned.

i took a class with a friend in jr high. it was offered by her church for free if you purchased the book. it was something to do wiht a friend so we both took the class. it came in handy in class when the teacher rearranged everyone's seats and we weren't sitting next to each other. we could sign to each other across the room. lol
it's been eons since we took the class, and i can't remember most of it. i have to go take ds's books back to the library tomorrow so i think i'll look to see if they have the asl signing book we used back then. (i saw it at borders last month)
the little bit i can remember has come in handy at work. we have a few deaf customers that come in, and i can usually get the jist of what they are signing but still have to get a pen and paper to communicate with them.wife to carl
