Question WWYD about dd? She is sick.

My dd Claire is 17 months. She has had a terrible cold for over a week. On WEdnesday morning I took her in and she has croup (horrible coughing and wheezing that night). They put her on a steroid and she is doing better. Finally on Friday she was happy!

Yesterday, saturday was a different story. The cold was still there and she was very crabby and her cough was really bad - congested, not croupy. Today she was even more crabby and dh took her temp finally and it was almost 100.

I have always heard that to get a fever at the end of an illness like a cold is a sign of infection. Usually a low grade fever at the begining of a cold or croup would be normal. That was what I had heard.

So would you take her back in to the DR? Dh gave her motrin and the fever is down for now. Should I do urgent care today? Or wait until tomorrow and go to her Ped? I get so concerned with coughs and breathing issues. WWYD?

    Thanks!

As pedi nurse I can say- your okay with a temp of almost 100*F. It's not that high for her age. take her in if temp reaches 103*F and sustained.
Because her fever went down with motrin.. I'd have no worries.
If Motrin wasn't helping and she was climbing.. you'd have worries. You can alternate with tylenol and motrin if you want. Be sure to give her plenty of fluids. Babies with temps/not feeling well- tend to not drink that much.. which would cause dehydration. A sign of dehydration is temperatures, dry lips, no tears, sunken skull. Get right in if that's happening. She probably needs about an ounce of fluids an hour. Especially if all bogger-y (not a medical term). I don't know her weight- just guessing.
I sure hope she feels better.

I'd take her to the urgent care if you are really concerned. It'll give you some peace of mind. Have they reccomended a humidifier? Big hug, no fun when little ones are sick. Hope she's feeling better soon.

I'm with frugalfanny. That's pretty much what we've done with the kids were sick as babies.
    No fun, I know.

Thanks y'all. Her fever was up around 100 again before dinner. I decided to take it after dinner and make a decision. It was down to 98.5 at that point. So I don't know what the deal is, but her fever is gone. She was very tired and went to bed at 6:30, instead of 7:30. I guess I hope she sleeps it off and is better in the morning. Thanks!

I have always been told that kids fevers will spike later in the afternoon and before bed... DD (2yrs) can have a very mild fever in the AM and it be at 100 or 101 by evening... My pediatrician won't even see her unless she has a temp of 103 or more.. I have asked around, and that is the "norm" now adays... I would do as frugalfanny said, and wait it out just a little longer... By all means if her other symptoms worsen, or if she has signs of dehydration take her in immediately.... I hope she is doing better.. I hate it when they are sick at that age, when they can't tell you where they hurt... ((((HUGS)))) to you both.

I just wanted to add that you should feel free to call your DD's ped. whenever you have any questions like this, no matter when they come up.

If I were considering taking DD to urgent care, I would most definitely call the ped, even on the weekend. Unless it was a true emergency and I didn't have time to call, I would want to get their opinion before I did anything like urgent care. They should be okay with you calling on the weekend- they knew when they became a doc, and especially a ped, that they would get called anytime, day or night. DD's ped even told us her home # was in the book if we ever needed her.

Please don't hesitate to call the doc if you feel concerned enough to consider urgent care.

Kimberly said it right... don't feel like your putting the doc out by calling with your concerns. It's okay. Believe me. They'd MUCH rather help you over the phone in this situation - than for you to show up at the emergency room - Thus prompting the doc to come into the emergeny room. It's a win/win situation. Call whenever you're in doubt. Trust me.
