Default Does your dh ever leave the car completely out of gas for you?

I went to drive the kids to school this morning and the tank was so far beyond the "E" it amazed me.  I don't even know how he managed to get home from work last night.  I wasn't going to even try to make it to the gas station.  So we walked to school and were a few minutes late.

He did this to me 2 weeks ago too.  I had to drive to the gas station right away before taking the kids to school.  I get there and realize I forgot my debit card!  Had to go back home to get it.  Man, was I nervous!

Philip has never done this. My younger sister is notorious in our family for this habit though. Or she'll say "I put $5 of gas in," like we should give her a medal or something. $5?! That's hardly enough to drive to the gas station these days.

    No, never.

He is really, really good about gas, which is saying something, since we have such long commutes and need gas a couple times a week.

I can count on my fingers how many times I have had to put gas in my car since I got pregnant with DD almost 3.5 years ago.

On the days I work, we each drive both cars (we like to keep DD in the bigger, safer car, and he has to meet me at work to get her in order for us both to be at our jobs when we need to, so I drive her in my car to where I work, and he meets me there and we switch cars. He gets into mine and takes her home.) So, he will put it in my car then and in his car on his way to or from his work.

And when my car needs it at other times, he will just get in it and take it to the gas station before he goes to work or anywhere else, then bring it back home to me.

And I meant to add a big growl to your husband for doing that to you. I'm sure he makes up for it by doing other wonderful things for you.

Ditto. I can't even remember the last time I had to fill my own tank, and we have separate vehicles. This is one thing he's very good at.
If it were the other way around, I would probably be the one leaving him on an empty tank

I guess I am spoiled. I never have had to think about it. Dh will top off tank if it is below half. I will have to add this to 'another reason I love him' list.

Sara rarely drives the car. I think she had to put gas in it maybe once in 7 years.

She bailed me out for taking out trash on numerous occasions.

never. He is more fussy than me about never letting it get too low.

It may help your dh if he realizes that if you get air in the works that sucks the gas into the engine-- modern engines have some computerized expensive gizmo that costs a lot to repair or replace-- I forget what it's called

    that it's an expensive fix.

Old cars no, newer gas saving engines yes.

I'll ask dh what it is. But you don't want to do that.

The other thing to keep in mind is that you don't save money by letting it run low. The weight of a few extra ounces of fuel (gas is light) is miniscule compared to say a baby or a sack of groceries.

Keep a spare bill of money taped to the inside of the glove box and replace it as needed for emergency fill ups.

Try to run off the top 1/2 of the tank. When it hits half, it's time to fill up.

It's just a mental block, that we wait till near empty to fill up. It doesn't save money, it's just what we get used to as a habit. Habits can be changed.

If you've ever had to leave town in a hurry due to an evacuation order you learn the wisdom of this.

No. I won that battle years ago after stopping to pump gas with infants in the car. I would haul them both in to pay for the gas, put them back in the carseats and then pump the gas. Now it's just habit for him to check.
