Question How does one get involved in community service?

How did you get started? Were you asked or did you volunteer your time?

church for me too. I volunteered to do a group for quilting and one for baby blanket making. The baby blankets get donated to a local pregnancy/child/mother center and the quilts are donated randomly dependng on what the need is.

Our little community is very close knit-- and I got a phone call one day asking me to bake pies for a charity dinner. After I agreed to that, I got asked for just about every event that came along

I don't volunteer to often either. I wish I did more. The only thing I really do is crochet afghans, squares and baby afghans and donate to various online charities.

I saw an blurb in our local newspaper and ignored it. Later I saw the very same blurb in my jobs newsletter and figured it was what I was supposed to do so I joined the "Friend Advocate Program" to help seniors.

When we moved to Fl in June, dd and I went to the library the next day and volunteered. Then when I signed her up for kindergarden I asked about the PTA, and joined.

Community service is very important to DH and I. We met while being volunteers for a nonprofit organization that was extremely active in the small town we were living in. He was new to town
I had been asked to join that group.

Now we belong to International Lions Club and the club we belong does alot in our community, which is what we like. I contacted our local Lions club about joining. We are working an event every week or every other week depending on the time of year.

I also am on the committee that cooks meals for members of our church, if their having/had a baby or theres been a death etc. I was asked if I wanted to become involved with this group.

I have also cooked desserts for a private nursing home. A neighbor had asked me if I wanted to do that.

This isn't "community" work (more International) but I also work with kids living in poverty in Mexico every chance I get. And I searched that opportunity out.

I should note that our involvment in community work is one reason that DH and I have downscaled/simplified our lives, so we can have the time.

I used to volunteer at the kids school a lot and when our dd was a sr. in high school I volunteered along with another lady to run the concession stand for a basketball season. THAT was a quite the committment. We did very well and made over $15,000 for the sr. class that year and they got to go to Florida for their sr. trip.

I don't volunteer through organizations but I have been thinking of meels on wheels. I do try to help anyone that I know that needs meals brought in when sick or during a time off loss and I volunteer on many, many bridal and baby showers. During a 2 month period last year I think I did 5 wedding showers.
