Habitat for Humanity
One would think it would not be a hard thing to become a volunteer, but I have had a devil of a time trying to hook up with this organization! They used to have an office close to my house, but when I went by there, the office was closed and appeared abandoned. So I check on-line, and there is supposedly one in a nearby town. Link to website attached, so I click on the link to find an empty page. I've sent an email, and no reply. I guess they have all the volunteers they need!

Have you tried their main link http://www.habitat.org/default2.aspx You might try e-mailing them and asking them where the closest place is to volunteer. You might have to send a couple e-mails before they reply. Remember that most people working for them are volunteers.
I don't think they ever have enough volunteers. They are very active in our province and are always willing to take help.

Oh I hope you can hook up with them. My 85 year old FIL often works with them

I went to their main link and put in my zip code, which is how I got the web site address (that was blank). I may try Sacramento next. It is a little more of a drive for me, but do-able.

Well, I finally got a call back from HFH. The lady who called me, who is their volunteer coordinator, was really not very pleasant or helpful. She left a message yesterday, and when I called her back today, she sounded like she had better things to do than to talk to me, even though I was just trying to find out the address of the office where she told me I had to go to get a volunteer application. I'm still going to try to hook up with the organization, but I hope the rest of the group is a little more upbeat! :-(

Dh and I volunteered, sorta, for HFH a couple times. We actually just stopped in and offered our help. They were more than willing to show us what we could do.
As for the volunteer coordinator that you spoke with, hopefully she had just had a bad day and didn't realize just how unpleasant she was being. The ones we were in contact with were all pretty pleasant to be around.

My Dd will be working on a project for HFH inwinnepeg this summer! Her youth group have been fundraising for two years with all the money going to this home. The family has been picked and the teens here are just so excited and can't wait to meet them.
It is just such an incredible thing to do! To give someone a home! In fact my foyer is full of garbage bags full of clothes that our neighbours have been dropping off for our latest fundraiser a clothing/bottle drive.....we are always in the middle of something for HFH lately.
