Marhaba from Lebanon
Hi. My family moved to Lebanon (the country) in July and into our apartment in September. I have an 8 year-old son who's in 2nd grade and boy and girl twins who'll be 2 in another week. Things over here can be very expensive, especially canned goods. Fresh foods are very readily available and the prices tend to be very good. I'm really in need of good recipes that call for things made from scratch. Or at least some good ways to deal with cans of stewed tomatoes, etc. called for in recipes. I have a food processor and just puree tomatoes for sauce (tomato paste is ok price-wise). I just have so many recipes calling for canned goods and I can't get them for 3 for a dollar like in the States. Any ideas for good website, etc.?
I'm looking forward to reading different threads for ideas on how to be frugal over here. Things that are inexpensive back home aren't here and vice versa. If anyone has lived overseas and had similar problems, I'd be really interested in hearing from you.

to FV! I'm sure there are threads here that can help you. Unfortunately I don't know much about canning or using up fresh vegetables either. I look forward to hearing about Lebanon!

Welcome to FV, Beth!
Check out the Kitchen Basics section here on FV and search the threads all the way back to the beginning as you have time. There are lots of recipes and recipe sites posted there. Also check out the Natural Living forum back to the beginning. I know there are some vegetarian websites posted there.

Welcome to the Village! Must be such a different lifestyle living in Lebanon, where are you originally from?
I often use fresh ingredients in place of canned. just give them time to cook in the dish or partially cook them then add to dish to finish cooking.
You can also make your own homemade "cream of..." soups. And all kinds of other things. Making all this yourself is so much better for you but sometimes takes a little planning ahead.

marhabateen!!! Welcome to the village!!
You may just have to start cooking more like an Arab
My in-laws moved to Hawaii a couple of years ago and had to drastically change their diet when suddenly fish and mangoes and sweet potatoes were dirt cheap and fresh, but not things like tomatoes, strawberries or milk!!
You could try looking on raw foods websites for recipes that might use more fresh ingredients.
