New here need encouragement
Hello, I found the Village about two weeks ago and have been looking. I finally joined today. DH and I are not in debt as bad as some others on here, we are just in a tight spot right now. After I pay the electric bill today we will have about $40 left until next week (payday). DH needs to get two prescriptions filled and also has a Dr. appt today. He went Wednesday, still in pain, they said come back this afternoon. Another $20! We have no CC and no EF. What does anyone else do when there is no money? When tax refund comes we can get caught up and start saving some. Hooray!

Hello Paquita,
Do you have unused items that you might be able to sell on ebay or even post here? (In the for sale or trade forums of course).
As for scrounging when there is no money, of course:
- we try to find things to sell
- we make leftovers for lunch or dinner
- we make due with what we have to last till payday
Do you have any friends or family members that can lend you some money till payday?
Believe me if you have anything to sell, let me know or post in the for sale or trade forum.
Best of luck and again... WELCOME!

to FV, Paquita. I'm sorry you're in such a tight spot right now.
Do you have food in your pantry? Do you know of a food bank, charity or church that might be able to help you temporarily? You may be able to ask the Dr. to bill you, so that you won't have to pay today. If you can think of anything you can quickly sell or some way to borrow a bit of money from someone, that might help.
I'm sorry I don't have more advice for you. Hang in there!

Hi Paquita and welcome!
You've come to the right place for help. You've gotten good advice so far. The only thing I can add is if possible start your savings as soon as your refund comes in. It's such a good feeling!

is there a way to start a tab at the pharmacy or have the dr. bill you at a later time? we're lucky in that my hubbys job has a flex card. the first year we had them, we got 500 FREE dollars for prescriptions, copayments and even gas to get to the appointments. this year we have to pay for it ourself, we chose 750 dollars. but that amount was available at the begining of the year and they take a few dollars out of every pay check for the rest of they year. i dont know what kind of work you do, but you might check into that. i know alot of companies are doing it now.

Used book/record stores usually pay cash, so if you have any extras, you can take some of those in. I was going to mention the pantry, but someone else already did that - great idea, and you can get creative with what is in there! I mentioned in a previous post that one of my favourite meals is made from three ingredients: soup stock, an egg, and flour!
I am a member of the FreeCycle Yahoo group for my area. If you search Yahoo groups, there are FreeCycle groups all over. There may be one in your area. Great stuff to be had, and if you want to go to the effort of reselling it, it might bring in a few dollars. I have seen just about everything offered for free on that group, including canned food, furniture, a computer, etc.DH aka Mad Hen

You've gotten great advice already, just wanted to add we've done things like sold coke cans, gathered up all the change in the house and rolled and cashed it in, took back any recent purchase that was a want and not a need (that we hadn't used ofcourse)...... .
Keep thinking creatively, I'm sure you'll come up with some ideas.

Did your DH ask the doctor for some sample meds to hold him over until you can afford to pick up the prescriptions?
“When you get to the end of all the light you know
and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown,
faith is knowing that one of two things will happen:
you will be given something solid to stand on,
or you will be taught how to fly.” - Edward Teller
“Our Earth is degenerate in these later days;
there are signs that the world is speedily
coming to an end;
bribery and corruption are common; children no
longer obey their parents;
every man wants to write a book and the
end of the world is evidently approaching.”
— From a translation of an inscription on
an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

You might also go to a health department for the dr's appointment and sometimes if you know the dr he will give you samples if you explain your situation.
