Default What is weird about your house?

You know....every house has some bizarre thing that you wonder why someone did it??? Ours would have to be carpet in the master bath I hate it!!! What contractor came up with this idea??? Also, none of the hallways, rooms, are square. They all have weird angles. For the most part I like it, but like in the bath where we want to tile the floor...what a nightmare for labor!
It does cut down on sound from room to room though...noise doesn't seem to flow around the weird angles as much. And it's fun to decorate

The original owner stuccoed the walls inside to cover up the fact that it's fake wood paneling----if you accidently fall against one, it scrapes the heck out of you. A nightmare when Isaac was learning to walk. And of course, you can still tell that it was fake wood paneling.

Our dining room looks just like a bedroom. It has a door but no closet. It's weird- because you feel so enclosed when you eat in there.

It's like someone thought- maybe some future family might like to use this dining room as a bedroom one day!

I'd like to open up the wall between the kitchen and dining room but hubby's reason NOT too. Get this... ' the house will have more value with 5 bedrooms instead of 4' OMG!!! It was a man who thought of the bed/diningroom. I knew it!!!

So far I've found the phone plug in, light switch and outlet under the corner wall cabinets. I accidently found them when I was planning on putting a paper towel holder under the cabinets and looked up under them.

Just last month after moving the wood stove, we found an outlet under the stairs! How was anybody suppose to use that one?

Those are the most weird but our house is full of them.

    Frugal Franny,
My mother had the wall between the kitchen and dining room knocked out and it made a huge difference in her house. She never used the dining room anyway.

My DH is redoing our bathrooms and has found some weird things in the wall Boards nailed to studs for no reason?
Cigarette butts in the wall, that had to have been the builders.
I have several windows that I ask myself "why did they put those there?" They are not centered on the wall. You should have heard the words DH used when he was putting up crown molding in the downstairs bathroom The room was not square at all, it was not as easy as it looked.

I still love my house quirks and all.

we ripped out a island in the kitchen (we are the first owners of our house) because you couldn't open the dishwasher all the way. It hit on the island. so you couldn't pull out the drawer of the dishwasher at all...

there was an outlet on the island...so now instead of an outlet on a wall there's an outlet on the floor where the island used to be.

Well as for our house a few things really...

    1. in the kitchen there were 4 layers of different types of that cheap flooring and get this all of these were on top of BEAUTIFUL hardwood flooring, original with the house

    2. The butt ugly wallpaper which was from the olden days but underneath the wallpaper were like florescent green walls

    3. The carpet in the master bedroom is an ugly old green, yuck! It's still there cause well it costs money to replace

There are probably a bunch more but I gave you the top 3.

Our house has been built in stages since 1860 so there are a LOT of quirks. We have two front doors (we only use one), we had a telephone jack in the bathroom (we've removed that), we stripped layers and layers and LAYERS of wallpaper in our living room before we moved in and we found one of those old sunset murals underneath it all. It was so ugly! And it took tons of primer and paint to cover it up again.

My house has no hallways - at all.
Every room flows from one to teh other - I guess at 1000 sq ft they didn't want to waste any on useless hallways!!!
Plus my house was built as a cabin back in the day, then it converted to a "house" sometime in the 70's, so it's kinda strange. The bathroom is bigger than either bedroom.

Ours is a split level........split foyer.....ya now what I mean? The Garage is under the house. Anyway, the previous owners put a second door into the garage in the basement. Why, I donno. The doors were about 5 feet away from each other. One enters in the normal place...a hallway & the "new" one into the laundry room right behind the furnace.

Oh, and when we moved here, you had to go thru the family room, then a basement bedroom to get to the laundry room. AND the doors opened the wrong way, so we had to close one first to open another.....with a load of laundry in your arms.

    Strange.

The occupants are the weird things at our house. We are collectors, DH loves plants and we have dozens and dozens from all over the world. No lawn at all just flower beds with cement walkways, just like a public garden. Not complaining I love it. Something is always in bloom and the smells are heavenly. My collections are cookbooks well over 1000 , regular books of all types and cookie jars. We have shelves everywhere full of books. Not one room in the house is spared all rooms have books somewhere. We a very lucky as 90% have been given to us so the outlay has been small.
