What places have you found to volunteer?
There seems to be quite a few places in our community. There's the hospital auxiliary, the churches, the schools, a charity quilting group (actually several)... What opportunities are available where you live?

DH and I are both volunteers of the local volunteer fire department, the little league baseball association, and the schools.

DH and I are members of the International Lions Club that raises money which goes back into the community, collects glasses and hearing aids.
There are garden clubs that work on public lots and gardens. Housing Rights Office. Library. Adopt a Highway. Working with the homeless, shelters. Pregnancy Center. Senior center.
I don't have kids but I guess one could volunteer to help with your local Brownies, Girl and Boy Scouts.

I go to online prayer request lines and pray for people who are requesting prayer in a certain area of their lives. I might pray individually for 20 to 50 people at a time.

Stacey, could you list some URLs for the on-line prayer requests? This is something I may be interested in.

Jean,
I go to "google" and type in prayer requests. Pages upon pages of sites will come up. I randomly pick sites where they list peoples prayer requests and I start praying. We all need prayer at times. Pray for them today and someone will be sure to pray for you tomorrow.

I volunteer from home for a national organization.... one that anyone who's been around the village a while has already heard me go on and on about before.
Chemo Angels is a program where the volunteer "angels" are matched up with a patient going through chemo, and we adopt them via snail mail during the course of their treatment. I've been doing this for about four years now and I love it.
Locally, my most recent volunteer duty was with my MOMS Club... baking cookies and working a shift at a bake sale to raise money for Katrina victims.
In the past, I've volunteered with the local Right to Life group (staffing a county fair booth-- an adventure!!), my church, and other places.

I don't usually volunteer in an "organization" but I volunteer by doing lots of showers for brides to be in our community. I try to do as much good as I can think of where others are concerned. I'm certainly no angel, it does as much for me to help someone else as it does the other person.

I used to volunteer for the local mental health association. They had a program that matched volunteers with kids in the school system who were having difficulties, like social struggles, home issues, whatever. Once a week I spent the morning with a great little boy, reading, doing a craft or playing a game. It was fun, and so rewarding to know how much he looked forward to our time together!

DH volunteers with Boy Scouts sincs both DSs are in Scouts.
I volunteer for SMART (Start Making A Reader Today). It is a literacy program to help at-risk kids. I have been doing it for five years and love it.
I also volunteer at our local animal shelter. I spend time doing dog obedience and petting every kitty in the place!

I volunteer at my daughter's school and I am part of my church prayer chain. We have a list of names who are in the prayer chain and their phone numbers. When someone has a prayer need we start at the top of the list and that person calls the next and it goes on like that until the whole chain is called. It really feels good to pray for those in need.
I also donate money to the homeless shelter and home for abused wives and their children.

You might try this website: www.volunteermatch.org to find a volunteer position near you. I don't know how good the nationwide coverage is, but there are pages and pages for my locale.
