What type of freezer do you have? Do you really like it? And Why or why not ? My chest freezer bit the dust last winter and I still haven't replaced it. I want to get one that is the right size and energy efficient this time. Sometimes buying appliances is such a hard decision.
Thanks
I have a Kenmore 7 cubic foot chest freezer. I'd love a slightly larger one. But we got this one at a yard sale 2 or 3 yrs ago for $30 so I really can't beat the price.
I do like it, even though it's not frost free. It has a basket at the top as well as a shelf near the bottom.

We bought an upright this spring to replace an ancient chest freezer someone gave to dh about 15 years ago (it was 30+ years old then!) It is not a frost free because for long term storage, a frost free will (more likely) make your food dry out and dehydrate. We chose an upright for the space issue and ease of finding stuff. I think it is about 20 c.f. and we got it on clearance for 400.00.
I also have a Kenmore chest freezer, I think it's 9 cubic feet. I love being able pick things up at really great sales or buy things in bulk. It also helps cut down on trips to the grocery store. I can also always have a plentiful supply of the Flav-or-ice or Pop-Ice already frozen!
We do camp a lot, so the bottom is covered in frozen milk jugs of water, which helps to keep it full. It has a shelf on one side and a basket, which help keep things organized. You can also buy additional baskets to fit in.
My mom loves how organized her upright freezer stays, but thinks that my chest freezer hold more and costs less to run. She loses so much cold when she opens hers.
As for it being a Kenmore, during one move my freezer key ended up long gone. Went to Sears to buy a new one, they gave me two free! Gotta love great customer service AFTER the sale!

We have a Kenmore 7 cu ft chest freezer close to 30 years old. We also have 2 older fridges and use their freezer compartments. More often than not all of these plus the freezer compartment of our side-by-side are full.
When this chest freezer bites the dust, I would like an upright in spite of all the disadvantages like less space and energy efficiency, because with advancing age and diminishing health it gets more and more difficult to dive in to reach that container of chicken thighs or bag of cookies at the bottom.
I have a kmart freezer 4 cbit feet, 25 years old or more, bought for $25 from afriend, cleaned it, and repainted it with oil paint. Looks like brand new. It isnt in use right now, but thisfall it will be.

Thanks Ladies. I went out loking at them again today. I am leaning toward the upright for the ease of organizing, however, it seems the chest freezers are cheaper to purchase and operate. I would like to have this freezer in my old age, so........decisions, decisions........ as you can see I am torn in two.
Sometimes classics are that just one simple reason? Id go with a chest freezer myself.
What I keep seeing is that a lot of y'all say that an upright one is easier to organize but I cant picture how? Everything has to be stacked up on top of each other - thats how Im visualizing it. I know I must be wrong - can someone please explain?
Thanks!

Hi Shorty,
I think the whole idea for the upright being easier to organize is that you can see things better because of the shelving inside, but with a chest freezer you have to get into the freezer and sift through to find what you want, therefore making the upright more desirable, but not as efficient. I'm still not sure what I want, so I won't make a decision just yet. To me this is a big decision, but will have to go through it all over again when it comes time to buy a new stove, which I will desperately be needing soon. I already know what type of refridgerator I am going to get. I don't ever want another side by side.
Kabin, what is it you don't like about the side-by-side? A couple of years ago I got my first one, and I like it very much because there are more shelves so I can group certain things together on one. However, the freezer side is not very practical because the shelves cannot be adjusted.

The only way I can describe it is that even though the fridge is big, over 20 cu. ft. the space is all vertical instead of horizontal. That is why I don't like it. I like to do things like marinades and cool treats but there isn't enough room to hold some of the dishes. I won't be getting a new fridge for a while. I bought it brand new from Sears 15 years ago and it's still going strong.
Got our General Electric chest freezer about 3 years ago to replace an old, old general Electric my folks gave us that they had when I was a kid in the late 60's.
I love a deep freezer for the amount of stuff I can cramp into it. I keep track of stuff in it on a clipboard hanging over it and by making sure to MARK Everything Before it goes in.
Here I get the chance to freezer tons of citrus fruit and juice plus lots of fresh veggies. Come the fall I have the makings for many a nice meal and dessert. My clipboard keeps me on track with using up items that might otherwise get lost in the bottom. I note which area of the freezer its in so I don't have to keep the lid open longer than necessary. Marking everything also helps in this manner. When I'm low on money I go to my freezer list when I'm making out my menus and I can always find the makings for several meals.
