    Default Laptop,notebook help

I couldnt find any other place to post this...

Anyways...I'm looking for a laptop. Nothing fancy but something that can handle the internet(cable modem),instant messaging, and maybe adding a few games.
I dont want to spend no more than $1000..less if I can...I found one at Wal-Mart for $656 does anyone know enough about them to tell me if this would be good? Does it have a good processor, enough memory, good brand etc....

    Thanks!!!!

Going off of what my DSS told me You will want at least 1 or 2 gig processor, and as much RAM, 256 and above, 512 is double this, to handle the load and not get bogged down, incase you want to add pics. and other stuff.

I'm not sure, sorry, just passing along the info he gave me before. My brother bought a pc from walmart a few years ago, but desk top, and he likes it pretty well. Maybe someone else will jump in with more info for you. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I think you get what you pay for. I have a MacBook, worth every penny. My MiL bought a $500 Dell at the same time and it's spent more time with the Geek Squad than with her.

honestly, I would try to get something with a centrino processor. That is just my preference. I heard that celeron processors are slower than the pentium or centrino. Go do a little research on www.pcworld.com. That is where I went when I was in the market for a laptop. Good luck.

I have a client that runs a computer repair place and he said that Most all WM electronics are refurbished and that is how they are able to sell so cheap. NOW I was thinking that if it was repaired/refurbished they would need to state that fact but??? Might be something you want to look further into before you purchase. This guy is an upstanding person and he wouldn't strike me as the type to lead me a stray.

I have a dell. It is an 8600 I think. I like it, but I did have to put a new hard drive in it after only a year. 3 months after the warranty expired. Go figure that one.
I never heard of the two processors that you mentioned, but that is not saying a whole lot. I do not keep up on computers too much unless I am trying to buy one. That is when I do all my research. I do not plan on buying another one until next year. You can also go to www.dell.com or any other maker of computers and build one to see how much it will cost. Some of them have already put together systems as well. That is what I did when I was trying to decide what to buy. Make sure that what you are buying will last you for a while. I got a laptop that had more than the current desktop that we had. I would say don't settle for something just cause it is cheaper. Get what you want so that you will be happy with it down the road.

The one for 728 is a pretty good computer. Keep in mind, though, if you are going to be using this for travel or college or something, 6lb gets heavy quickly. You might check Circuit City, Best Buy, Dell, Office Depot, Staples, Sam's Club, etc. because they have all been running specials on laptops lately and you might be able to get something smaller/lighter for less money with just as good a system.

By the way - my personal minimums for a laptop are Centrino processor, Wi-Fi, built-in CD/DVD combo, 512mb RAM and 60gb hard drive. Anything less than that will do what you need it to do, but might not do all the things you want it to do. You might also check the Dell Outlet...they have refurbs for good prices sometimes.

Thats me Traci--only keep up with it when I want to buy one

I will still be using my computer most of the time. I just want one for when I want to watch something on tv (no tv in here) and be online.Or take one outside while the kids are playing so I have something to do. I TRY to read but lose my train of thought hollering at them lol
Maybe take it on long trips...course I usually drive so ......I guess gives Steve something to do other than tell me how to drive

Thanks Edelweiss...I think I will check around.I did see one at Sams not long someone else was asking about and it sounded pretty good and he acted like he knew what he was doing lol

    Thanks everyone!!
