Default My lecture for you, please read

I've been SUPER busy the last few days but just had a really scary shake up and need to lecture someone, can't do it to the semi driver so will tell you guys, maybe it will save a life.

    SLOW DOWN!!

When you're on the roads if you get behind a farmer don't get so impatient, don't rush to pass them, don't get mad at them, they aren't out there just trying to frustrate people, they're out there working to put food on your table! My hubby was out on the road heading to our far hay field with the tractor with a baler AND A wagon on it, and yes he had a slow moving vehicle sign, he had the right to be on the road. A semi came up behind him and tried to pass on a hill, another car came the other way and it was a VERY near miss all around! I heard the horn, brakes and the tires and jumped in the truck to go check, thank God I didn't hear a crash or I don't think I could have driven out there. Hubby is shaken up and of course no one stopped, they all still rushed on their way.

Rather than rush take a minute, try to figure out what the equiptment is for, if you have kids with you use it as a learning experience, teach them where food comes from, that the man on the tractor is doing something to grow food for them, to feed cows to make milk, wheat to make bread.

    And number two

    Again slow down!

When you come to a Railroad crossing only marked with signs don't just go flying over, STOP AND LOOK! The guys on the train can NOT stop for you no matter how much they want to. Those guys are someones dads/sons, brothers, etc and believe me you don't know how badly it haunts them when there is an accident. Trains don't run into people, cars pull in front of trains!

K, done lecturing, thanks for letting me get it off my chest, it's been a rough few weeks for this wife of a farmer/railroader

Wow, I'm really glad there wasn't an accident. Everyone should slow down. Trying to save a few minutes is not worth risking your life or the lives of others for.

Wow, that was scary! I have seen some bad ones where I live and it is not a pretty sight. Saw one that almost always makes me slow down when I am driving, even after 6 years.

I'm glad your hubby is ok. There was a terrible wreck here in town last week where a van pulled out in front of a semi (that was going too fast on wet pavement), it slammed on its brakes, jackknifed and ran into the van, killing some of the people. A lifeflight helicopter came, and then broke down on the road. People were stuck in traffic for hours, and were so mad. I had to take a 2 hour detour to get home, but I was just thankful to have my life that day!
I can totally understand about the RR crossings too. I have lived in two towns that were filled with RR crossings, and I saw some really dumb people out there. I used to date a guy who's dad was a conductor, and I know he had some haunting memories.
Thanks for the lecture! It's an important one.

I'm with the rest of the gang. Glad no one was hurt.

But I do worry everytime my husband is driving his tractor on the road. Also when he is pulling a livestock trailer and cars cut him off. With that much weight he can not stop on a dime.

I so agree! I don't think people realize, or maybe they just don't care, that while pulling a trailer you CANNOT slam on your brakes......... there is another life in that trailer that is depending on you to get them home safely!

** I am glad to hear that noone was injured! Give your hubby a great big from all of us!

I'm glad you posted that. AND I"m glad everyone is alright. I was the passenger in a car with a young woman who cut off a fully loaded semi one time and I shrieked (thinking I was going to die... now I know what kind of noise I make).... she said "he can't hit us... he'd crush us like a bug...he wouldn't let his conscience take that!"

I looked at her for a moment in stunned silence then let her know that a fully loaded truck can take up to a city block to stop. .....and he WILL crush you like a bug. I never drove with her again.

Thank you so much for the lecture. I tend to drive too fast and your story was quite an eye-opener. I am very glad that your hubby is OK.

Frugalfarmerwife, I am so glad that no one was hurt, my DH farms across the road part-time with his Dad (herefords), and we too have had so many close calls. Everyone is in such a hurry all of the time!!!! It makes me nuts. If you are going the speed limit or even a bit below people think you drive like a turtle..pass,pass, tailgate, blow horns, we live in a crazy world!!!Give your Dh an extra hug, that had to have scared the willies out of him. Hope things get better for you soon.
