Where should I work?
Money is very tight right now and with buying a house and all there will be unexpected expenses I am sure, I just don't know what, when or how much. So dh and I decided that I would get a temporary part time job just over the holidays. I know it won't end up bringing in much, but a little bit will probably prevent some future crisises (spelling?) from happening. So I know it will have to be retail, and with dh's schedule it will have to be nights and weekends. Dh will be home by 4:00 everyday, so that should make it easier. So any ideas on a great place to work for a little bit? Where would YOU work if you were in this position?

My first choice? Waitressing/serving in a restaurant, hands down.
I do it now and with just four 5 hour shifts I can bring in nearly $300/week, sometimes more. As an added bonus, you bring your "pay" home every night and don't have to wait until payday for funds

I've never worked retail, but if I had to my pick - I think I would go for Target - night stock - I'd be in trouble though, what a great place to have a discount!!

Do you have children? If so, I would work at Toys R Us or Babies R Us. I have a friend that worked there last holiday season and she got, at times, a 50% discount! She plans to work there again this holiday season, I am thinking of doing the same...just for the discount.

Don't work at Wally World! Your rate of pay would be very low, and I don't think the measly discount (10%) even starts until after 90 days.

I am with Heather on this one. I waitressed for years. I can't now, because of severe carpal tunnel syndrome. I do still have a part-time job in a restaurant though, I work as a host/cashier, three evenings a week from 5-9pm. I get paid $8.00 an hour. About half of what I made waitressing.
I have done retail also. I found Dillard's was a nice place to work in retail, but they really do not want to hire someone that is looking only to work for a few months. They never hired "holiday help" when I was there. The pay was very good for retail. I did have to have a professional wardrobe to work there.

If you want to make money I would find a store you don't shop at, for me at a place like Michaels or even Target I would see all this cool stuff and use my discount and just give the store back what I made :~) So I would go and find a store that I wouldn't be tempted to spend my paycheck at...
I agree with the waitressing I have never done it personally but with pay and tips you can make more in the same amount of time then in retail.

I use to bartend and wait tables at LoneStar from 1997-2000. On any given Friday night I could make between $50.00 and $150.00 depending on business flow, section I worked, and whether I closed or not. At one time I worked through the management training program and became Service Manager After about a year of managing, quit doing it because I made more money bartending and waiting tables than managing.

I have worked at Michael's and Dillard's during the holidays. When I was at Dillard's they were paying me $10.00 / hour to stand in Men's wear. The store was never too busy in my dept. even the week of christmas. Michaels was awful! I spent every dime I made there! If you have a dillard's or macy's in your area I would check there!

My sister has been a part time seasonal sales person at her Toys R Us for the last five years. It works out great for her she does the kid drop off in the morning so her husband can go in an hour early and he does the kid thing in the evening so she can go to work til 9pm. She gets a great discount which we all use and the funds have helped her pay for Christmas and several home projects.
I also agree with waitressing. Here in our area we get the snowbirds from the first frost up north til Easter so there is always a high demand for servers.

Thanks for the ideas, I hadn't thought about some of those places. I have never waitressed before and am nervous at the thought of it LOL. I defnitely agree with finding somewhere to work that I don't normally shop at, I do not need to be spending money where I work. Thanks y'all!

If you don't have any physical limitations and don't mind alot of lifting you can load trucks for UPS. A girl friend of mine used to do it, her hours were 4am to noon.
“When you get to the end of all the light you know

faith is knowing that one of two things will happen:
you will be given something solid to stand on,
or you will be taught how to fly.” - Edward Teller
“Our Earth is degenerate in these later days;
there are signs that the world is speedily
coming to an end;
bribery and corruption are common; children no
longer obey their parents;
every man wants to write a book and the
end of the world is evidently approaching.”
— From a translation of an inscription on
an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
