Default Definition of the word "sere"

Hello all! True story: I teach fifth and sixth grade students, and the word "sere" appeared in a reading assignment. After using context clues to try to figure the definition out, we looked it up in the dictionary and found out it means "dry and withered." I asked the students to use it in a sentence, and one child raised his hand and said, "My mom's roast was very sere." I almost couldn't contain my laughter! Kids say the darndest things!!
