Default WooHoo! I'm Getting 10 Lbs. of Free Pecans

My hubby just called me from work to tell me that a guy (Eli) he works with has given us 10 lbs. of shelled pecans. Eli's dad retired and bought a farm up in middle Georgia last year. The farm has 20 pecan trees and hubby let Eli borrow our trailer two months ago so Eli could take a tractor up to the farm for his dad. Eli went up this past weekend to help his dad harvest the pecans and his dad sent the shelled pecans back to us to return the favor. The thing is, most of the pecans are perfect halves. I made a apple gingerbread cobbler this past weekend and the recipe called for 1/2 cup of chopped pecans. At our local Piggly Wiggly, 1/2 pound of whole pecans halves cost $6.99!

Yipee, I see lots of goodies in our future! Think I will bake a pecan pie for dessert tonight.

Tip, for those who don't know, nuts keep well in the freezer. I just pop mine into a ziplock freezer type bag.

Yep, I will bag up several 1 cup measures in freezer bags for my pecan pies, and I will bag the rest into quart bags. Since it's easier to chop frozen nuts, I will wait till I have a recipe calling for chopped pecans and chop them as needed.

Wow! That's a huge savings because pecans are so expensive! You'll have some great baking for Christmas this year! Congrats!

I was just talking to my DD on the phone about the pecans and she asked if I would make her two pecan pies to take to her DH's parents house for Thanksgiving. I told her she could come here and I would show her how to make her own pies, LOL.

I made two pecan pies last night, and they were wonderful! I'm also planning to have my 4 yr. old Grandson, Ethan, come spend a weekend with me before his Christmas break and we can make cookies and candies for his pre-school teachers. Ethan has two teachers, and Mickie has six, so we will have a fun, busy weekend.
