For those of you who have lived somewhere else...
For those of you who have lived somewhere other than where you grew up or made large location changes as an adult is there a food that you can't get where you live that you really miss? I'm not talking about smething grandma made from scratch that only grandma could make but something that you just can't truely get locally.
For me it's New York dinner cheesecake. I'm at my SILs for the holiday here on Long Island and just savored a half a piece of cheesecake I brought home from the dinner last night. Here's the difference
Ky-you can buy what they call New York cheesecake but it's kinda hard and dry and if you buy it at a restraunt it may be a wedge thats a half inch to an inch high and only about an inch wide at the back (and you pay 3.99 to 4.75 for it a slice)
NY dinner- A slice runs about 3.25 to 3.75. Is easily as high and as wide as my middle finger is long and soft and creamy all the way through. Thereis no need to apply pressure when you cut it...nor does it leav you searching for water after every bite.
My DH feels the same about pizza ..... here in NY he can go to any litle pizzaria and get a slice cooked in a brick oven (not on a conveyor belt and not from some chain franchise) and fold the pizza in half and watch the grease drip off while making sure the cheese doesn't go with it....Pizza Hut and Dominos just can't compare
So for those who have relocated what are you missing????? (and I'm hopeing you get to trek and enjoy it soon)

Oh...so many things. Probably the biggest is Sonic. I used to love to stop by and grab a drink when I was out running errands. And I'd kill for one of their Frito chilli pie burrito things. I also miss Fazoli's italian restaurant and On the Border mexican restaurant.
The other really big one for me is Caffeine-Free Dr Pepper. It's not sold in this state, and I've gone so far as to ask my mom to ship it to me for Christmas!

When we were kids and would trek from NY to Ky to visit my mom's sode of the family we'd bring pineapple soda down to my aunt and bring cases of Big Red back home with us for mom.

Well the first thing that came to my mind is seafood. I grew up in Mass and enjoyed all sorts of fresh seafood. Here in landlocked Colorado there is fish available of course but it just doesn't seem as fresh and of course its usually very expensive. Another thing I miss are high quality grinder/sub shops - Subway just doesn't cut it.

I moved from upstate NY to the midwest here in Michigan and let me just say there aren't any good cultural foods here. Everything is chain restaurants. yucko.
Anyway, some of the regional biggies I miss are Italian deli's, pizza, hotdogs, cheese, and yep cheesecake, chinese food, etc etc etc

I have never relocated to an area far away, but we traveled a lot when I was a kid. The best sandwich I ever had was from a shop in Wheeling West Virginia called "The Hoagie Shack". The best pizza I ever had was from a place in South chicago Heights called "Valentinos". My bro and SIL moved to Tenn a feww years back. She can't get Dingus sausage there and my mom always has tot ake some down with her. Also, my SIL can't get a certain kind of coffee there, so mom has to buy it here and take it down with her too. LOL Funny how things are so different from region to region, and yet not so different.

Sara,
I guess you could take a run into Chicago for that. They have some great resturants there, but then, that is a long way for dinner, even for me...lol although my Dad and I did go into Chicago, to China Town one time for dinner. It was very good, but that was 20 years ago

For me there are several things. When we were stationed in Germany in the early eighties I just loved this sandwich called a frickadell (I have no clue if I spelled that right) But it was a hard roll with a meat mixture of currywurst, pork and chicken with bread crumbs and it was deep fried. It was yummy. Then they had a meat called a swankbrauten and it was marinated with spices and onions. In Paris I loved how they made pizza. I hope one day just to visit and hopefully be able to have the above items and more.

When I went to college in Ohio, I missed bagels terribly! All I wanted was a Jersey bagel with butter or cream cheese on it from a bagel store or a deli, but there were none to be had in Wooster, Ohio!

When we lived in AL, I missed cheese curd & croghan bologna. Never mind bad imitations, they just didn't have that stuff PERIOD. Every summer we came home to visit, I would stock up on the cheese & meat. Dh would stock up on Labatts Blue Light (another thing they didn't have where we lived in AL).
Jrecks subs was another thing we all missed. Subway & Quiznos just do not compare.

I have two.
Red Vine brand of black licorice. Lucky for me I do have great friends that send me care packages sometimes.
Pronto Pups (local corn dog) painted with mustard! Especially if eaten at the county fair.

When we lived in TN we missed Cincinnati Chili (Skyline), UDF ice cream, and some other things that slip my mind (dang pregnancy brain!). Now that I live in Cincinnati I miss Sonic (Oh for some Cheddar peppers!), Baskin Robbins, and some "southern cookin'."

I have only moved away from my hometown for a short time. When I was away I missed In N Out Burger though. Also burritos. Here you find the worst looking place and they have the best burritos. When I was in the midwest it was commercialized mexican food. El Torito and such do not come close to authentic mexican food. There is a local pizza place here that I would miss if I ever moved away. We get pizza from there quite often.
